Lani Huston

21 APR 1963 near University of Utah, Utah

Lani died of carbon monoxide poisoning in her car. She had been skiing and got caught in a freak snow storm afterwards. She and a friend were killed. Her mother Marge told me this on March 5, 1999

SALT LAKE CITY (UPD— A California coed and a Salt Lake City man were found dead this morning at a ski resort about 25 miles southeast of here. Lani Huston, 18, of Palo Alto, and Lee Smith, about 22, of Salt Lake City, were found in an old model car, apparently asphyxiated by exhaust fumes. Sheriff's officers reported & friends of the couple said they left a party at Alta, the resort, Saturday night and had not been seen since. Everyone assumed they drove home. Chief Deputy P.L. Snow said there was no indication of foul play. He said the pair evidently was overcome by fumes. The car, which was in a parking lot at the resort, was covered by snow which had fallen almost steadily since Saturday night. Officers had to dig the vehicle out. The Salt Lake City police received a missing persons call this morning from the University of Utah, where Miss Huston was a resident student, at about the same time the bodies were found. The victims were discovered by Ned Christensen, a ski lift operator. The road to Alta was closed most of the morning because of heavy snow. Sheriff's officers used jeeps to reach the scene.

Lani was a wonderful friend, vibrant and always enthusiastic for life. I think of her often.

Lani was a lovely person and certainly died way too young.
