Neal Owwen O'Hanrahan

Neal O’Hanrahan, beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, at his home in Puyallup, Washington.
Born and raised in Paramus, New Jersey, Neal graduated from Paramus High School in 1979. A few months later, he answered the call to serve, enlisting in the United States Navy as a Corpsman. For the next twenty years, he devoted himself to a life of service, compassion, and leadership, retiring with honor as a Chief Petty Officer. His naval career took him across the U.S., including California, and overseas to Japan, Bahrain, and Germany. His steady strength, professionalism, and caring nature left a lasting impression on everyone he served alongside. After his final posting, Neal made Washington State his home.
In 2013, Neal met Kathy, and they were married in 2015. With warmth and humor, he stepped into the “girls’ world,” embracing Kathy’s daughters, Gennifer and Shawna, as his own. Over time, their family grew, and Neal found immense joy as “Grandpa” to his beloved grandchildren.
Known affectionately as “Mr. O,” Neal had a spirit as bright and boundless as a thousand tie-dye swirls. A lifelong Grateful Dead fan, he didn't just love the music—he lived it. His laugh was contagious, his stories legendary, and his kindness endless. Whether following the music on the road, cranking his favorite jams in the backyard, or telling tales that blurred the line between truth and myth, Neal lived boldly and unapologetically. He reminded everyone around him that life wasn't meant to be colorless or quiet—it was meant to be felt, shared, and celebrated.
Neal is preceded in death by his parents, Joan and John; his brother, Christopher; and his grandson, Xavier-Lee. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; daughters, Gennifer and Shawna; grandchildren, Nolyn, Nakoa, Xayvion and Cleo; and many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort knowing his song play son. Every story, every laugh, and every Grateful Dead tune will carry a piece of him.
