I am devastated by this news. Shelby was one of my closest high school friends. Between us we played all the old women in plays directed by Barry Kautz (who passed away a year ago at 88). Shelby and I stayed in touch through Facebook, and we had a wonderful lunch together in Chicago some years ago when she was visiting family and I was working at the AMA. This is a tough one.

What very sad news to read this evening.  Shelby was the poster child for the 'Late Bloomer'.  And Bloom she did.  Her accomplishments and degrees outshone all of her REHS female classmates.  Her profound words of kindness to many of her FB friends were heartfelt and insightful.  We have lost a wonderful woman.

Shelby and a group of us went to a pizza restaurant one night. The pizza was underdone. Shelby sent it back. I was impressed, I didn't know you could do that. What style!  Rest in peace, Shelby

This is not the news we want to hear.   When I think about Shelby I hear her yelling "Mother of Jefferson Davis she is passing the fox" which is trom Auntie Mame at RHS.   Her memory will never cease as she was one of a kind.   May all of us be inspired to live our lives to the fullest just as she has done.

I did not know Shelby well during our high school years. But she was such a traveler! I followed her on FB and a few years ago we had an extended interaction. We came to the conclusion that we certainly could be close friends if we were around each other now. Quite an amazing woman.

I can only remember her as the bubbly, vivacious, sharp wit that she was in high school.  Always fun to be with then and at the last reunion. It is no surprise that she accomplished so much professionally and personally.  May her memory be a blessing.

We are all at an age when sad news is going to keep coming, but Shelby's death was particularly sad to me. As I recall, we were in a couple of classes together, but I didn't know her well in high school. I got to know her much better through Facebook. She was a person of high attainments, but friendly and down-to-earth as well as wise. I remember she broke her hip eight or ten years ago, but recovered quickly and resumed her busy life with family and friends. My condolences go out to her family and friends, even to those of us who knew her only a little but were inspired by her example.

I knew Shelby since elementary school, through high school and including college.  Shelby and I were on the speech team together   Shelby coached me improving my delivery of my original monologue and helped me be an Illinois regional champion. The first two years of college, we were fifteen minutes from each other and the day Kennedy was killed, we got comfort in being together and sharing our grief. Shelby was a great writer and encouraged my writing as well. She was a friend through good and bad times. We had so much fun making up plays together and stretching our imagination.
shellby had many accomplishments after high school both vocational and academic and in terms of family and the community. She had the courage to continue reinvent herself. That takes courage and moxy and she had them both. Goodbye my friend
