Mary McGinty

Mary McGinty

On May 3, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer, Mary Smee (73), went on to meet her Lord and Savior. Mary did it all. She was a superwoman – the epitome of a working mom who wore her heart on her sleeve. She found reasons to love others. She loved her students at Shell Beach Elementary, where she worked for 15 years. She loved her five young grandchildren. She loved to sing and oftentimes led worship at the San Luis Obispo Church of the Nazarene, a church she attended since 1974. She was active in her women’s ministries group and in the local Republican women’s group. She loved to cook and sew.

Mary married her sweetheart, Gary (71), in 1969, while she was a junior at Pasadena College.

Mary is survived by Gary; son Garrett (00) and his wife, Randi (02); son Mitchell (03) and his wife, Heidi (02); five grandchildren, Lillian, Ellie, Braden, Emma, and Carter; parents, Rev. Robert and Reva Nell McGinty; sister, Robin Lindenmayer; brother, Earl and his wife, Sandy; and many other extended family members.

Mary was always sweet and kind. She was impeccably groomed and her hair was always perfectly styled. She was a fellow Drill Team member and stood close by as we were the "shorties" at the front of the line. I was so sorry when I heard she passed away a few years ago.

Mary was my best friend in high school.  She lived across the street from me on Del Rey Avenue, right near PHS.  We did so many things together, especially drill team.  She and I both attended Pasadena College.  After I married in 1971 and left Pasadena, we lost touch.  I did attend her funeral in San Luis Obispo and reconnected with her family.  She was a lovely girl, a dear friend and I am so sad that she is gone.
