Mary Helen Jarboe (Tate)

Mary Helen Jarboe (Tate)

Mary Helen Jarboe was born February 5, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky to Robert C. & Gladys Jarboe. Mary Helen Jarboe married Edward Wayne Tate, a U. S. Marine, on September  2, 1959 in Salem, Marion County, Oregon.

Mary Helen Tate joined our 1962 PHS class in our senior year, to finish high school and obtain her high school graduation diploma. Mary Helen's father was one of our school custodians and school-bus drivers. Their family lived in the large old Cockerum house located on North 9th Street across from Shaffer-Jensen Mortuary. Her younger brother Robert Jarboe was in the PHS class of 1965. Mary Helen lived with her parents while her husband was away. Mary Helen was pregnant when she came to join our class. She did not wear a cap and gown, nor march with us during our graduation ceremony. The only place a picture of Mary Helen Tate can be found in our 1962 AXE is on page 169, with her standing in a casual dress beside all our graduates, while we practiced our senior class song: "Hey Look Us Over". Clint Bellows of Ontario radio station KSRV helped us rehearse singing that song for graduation.

Mary Helen Tate attended Treasure Valley Community College for some time, but a photo of her did not get into that year book either. She was a very nice person and she was anxious to make a better life for herself and her baby daughter.

Mary Helen divorced Edward Wayne Tate May 9, 1979 in Linn County, Oregon. We don't know anything more about Mary Helen, except that someone let us know that she passed away, perhaps on 21 January 2012 in California.

Mary Helen Tate was my friend while we attended TVCC together. She had a darling little curly haired girl at that time. Sometimes I spent the night with her in her Ontario apartment. I don't remember when she quit college, but I enjoyed her very much.  ~Gerrie
