Robert Wright Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Legacy Funeral Home, Wasilla Heritage Chapel on Nov. 15, 2024.

Robert (Bob) Woodrow Wright Sr, the beloved husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend, left us at the age of 80 on November 12, 2024.
Bob was born on November 24, 1943, in Tempe, Arizona, the only son of Woodrow Thomas Wright and Mildred Edna Griess. His parents divorced in 1948. His mother moved to Payette, Idaho where she married Karl Weise in 1949. They had a ranch where the family raised calves and milk cows. Bob attended both grade school and high school in Payette. He loved to fish and was an avid hunter of both bird and deer. He spent many hours hunting and playing at the river with his trusty Chesapeake Bay retriever dog, Rex.
Bob joined the US Navy in 1960 and served four years with distinction aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard, CV-31, during the Vietnam war with duties in ammunitions ordnance. He received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam). He was honorably discharged in 1964.
In 1965, he married Alma Mae Shipley. They had two children, Robert Woodrow Jr. and Tina Louise. They were married almost 60 years.
Bob had a passion for understanding the way all things worked mechanically. He loved working on tractors, trucks and automobiles. He worked as a mechanic at Ford Motors, Hollingsworth John Deere Tractors, Datsun Motors and Treasure Valley Motors. He also drove long haul semi-truck for May Trucking and NACA.
In 1979, he opened his own Machine Shop business. His success in business can be directly attributed to his work ethic and his natural mechanical ability. His attention to detail was legendary. He took pride in the fact that he always left his customers satisfied.
Bob loved to garden and grow multiple crops to feed not only his family, but all the neighbors that contributed to the growth of the crops.
In 1988, Bob and Alma moved to Anchorage, Alaska and later settled in Wasilla, Alaska where they have spent the remainder of their time enjoying the great outdoors. Bob continued his love of fishing for salmon, halibut and stream trout whenever he could. They both loved to attend the annual Alaska Fair each summer to marvel at the gigantic vegetables.
Bob is survived by a wife, Alma, two children: Tina (Brent) Brown, Austin, Texas and Joe Cabrera, Fruitland, ID. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Nathan Wright, Ryan Wright, Lauren Brown, Nicholas Brown, Christopher Cabrera, Tyson Cabrera and Alyssa Cabrera. He is preceded in death by his son, Robert W. Wright Jr and two sisters Margaret Fuller and Shirley Thompson.
Services will be held at Wasilla Heritage Chapel on November 19, 2024 at 2pm.
