As I thought more about Dick and shared these memories with my wife I was reminded of a vision of Dick in full stride lightly floating over the cinders seemingly not even touching the earth that he loved to run on. I guess it is a reflection of his quiet and gentle nature that made it easy for all of us to, and want to, be around him. I too was sad to know he left us so soon. Not fair!
Hi, David. I often think--and brag--about that practice javelin throw of yours. Not many people have been hit by a javelin and lived to tell the tale! It still have the scar on my arm.... :-)
You are right about Dick. He DID seem to float over the track.
This has been fun...one memory leads to another! I am very grateful you have only a scar Bob but I believe Roger Sandvold may have avenged my insult to your arm in the following example. As I related in speaking about Roger during his memorial servce he was never one to be ordinary in anything he did even when it came to standing up from a sitting position. One fine fall day, myself, Roger, George Moore, Harold Delamarter, and Dick were resting in the grass at the top of the hill just behind the high school having finished a very hard series of hill workouts and catching our breath and cooling down. When Roger went to get up he didn't just get to his feet like a normal person, no, he executed a perfect back flip which resulted in his perfect landing right on my left hand while wearing 3/4 inch spikes. I still have that scar today between my first and second joints where the spike went clear through. I was then gifted with not only the insult to my hand but an incident I could tease Roger about for the rest of his life. It hurt then but is good for a laugh now. When great days those were!
Hi, Darryl I'd like to make to the next reunion; I have only been to one--so long ago now that I can't even remember which one it was. Do we know when the next one will be? I voted for in five years--in hopes that a number of us will still be alive. (A confession: I have hesitated to go because I won't remember anyone's names!)
Hi Bob! At our 55th Reunion, some wanted to have future ones every 2 yrs. (me) and more said every 5 yrs. COVID nixted the 2 yr. possibly, and that leaves 2024 as the 5th yr. next one. However, l'm pushing to have the next one be NEXT year, 2023 !! In light of the alarming rate that we've been losing our fellow Classmates, and in light of all the strife we've gone thru the past two years. TIME' S AWASTING! And there's still those I remember fondly like YOU, whom I still haven't seen since Highschool! I hope you share my feelings Bob, and if you do, please help me push for us getting together next year! Meanwhile, take care and stay in touch!! Regards---- ---Darryl
I would certainly supprt a reunion in 2023. I didn't attend any reunions, Bob, until the last two and I am really glad I did! My recognition for names came back very quickly as soon as facial recognition kicked in which was a little challenging in some cases since some folks had changed or aged more than others and I only had my memory of them of how they looked in 1964...lol! Lets do it!
It is heartwarming to hear so many great memories of Dick Hall, especially his great personality and how gorgeous his stride was; I thought I was the only one who marvelled at how he never touched the ground as he floated around the track. He was amazing to watch.
