Harriet was my next door neighbor and for many years like a big sister.
I remember the morning after she chose to take her own life. My mother was in the laundry room ironing some clothes for me before a trip to Europe. Harriet's mother, Sylvia started yelling "Oh my God, Clare..Oh my God!!" My mother yelled for my father and I to come downstairs. We had no idea what was going on.
Her mother was hysterical, my mother was holding her.
There laid Harriet, under the exhaust pipe, in the garage beneath her fathers aqua green Grand Fury. I checked for a pulse. There wasn't one. The body was cold. Her mother wailed....
She was the first person I had ever come in contact with that upclose and personal who had chosen to end their life on their own.
They said she had just broken up with someone, or someone had broken up with her. It was a sad, sad day..
She was always so much fun when we were little....
I have lots of happy memories of Harriet...as she lived 6 houses away from me and was only a little more than a year older, we did alot together when we were young - roller skating...jacks on the kitchen floor (she usually won)... step ball...and just hanging out with the neighbors. I will always remember her fondly.
