Bottle tops Posted Friday, May 22, 2009 04:51 PM Anybody remember playing beeries? Took a soda or bear bottle cap rubbed it on the sidewalk till all the paint was off. Sometimes remove the cork and fill it with wax or lead to make in heavier. ~ |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Friday, May 22, 2009 05:39 PM bottle_caps.jpg My brother Warren and I had a bottle cap court (is court the right word?) in our basement at 4976 Pennway. We had a concrete floor and drew it there. It was about 9 feet square. Also, remember playing it in the streets. We also chalked a lot in the streets. |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Friday, May 22, 2009 09:29 PM Yes Gary court is correct. It had small boxes numbered 1 to 15. ~ |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Saturday, May 23, 2009 09:53 PM For those of us who were a bit "north" of yous guys in the 5000 block, we played a mean game of kick ball in the alley between Pennway and Whitaker. Up at the red brick wall at the top of the alley by Herkness, we played chink; We'd draw beeries courts on patios or in the street. And how about the great sled rides down Pennway's 5000 block or behind on the "hill"? |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Sunday, May 24, 2009 07:22 AM Way to go Ira I forgot about the sled rides! Most of the parking on Pennway 5000 block was the back in kind. After a good snow fall the cars would slip and slide as they tried to back up. The more they tried the more they would slide and the more they would slide the more ice they made. The more ice the better the sled rides . Sometimes the sun would melt a patch of the street at the bottom of the hill right down to the black top. Hitting that was like automatic brakes. ~ |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Sunday, May 24, 2009 09:11 AM And who remembers "Suicide Hill." That's where we walked, pulling our sleds up the Blvd from "F", across the Tookany to the "other side" by "D" street. |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Sunday, May 24, 2009 02:57 PM I have vague memories of Suicide Hill! Was that the one with the tree root growing into the path of the sled such that with a good head of speed you'd go airborne for a few seconds? You had to belly-flop that one. |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Sunday, May 24, 2009 06:26 PM Don't remember being that lucky those years. I was a bit chubby growing up and not very confident. That didn't fully turn around until the early 1970s. |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Wednesday, June 2, 2010 03:05 PM I may be a bit younger than the average age of the members but I have very fond memories of playing Steal the Bacon, Spring or Freedom and Kick the Can. |

RE: Bottle tops Posted Wednesday, June 2, 2010 03:27 PM I was born in June 1953. The apartments were there before I was born. R&W was owned by the Bush family and it was named for two sons, Ray and Warren. |
