I heard a story similar to Sen. Kennedy's.
A hurricane hit the south, and torrential rain caused the dam to break, sending floodwaters through the valley. A retired Marine chaplain was standing on his front porch, watching the water rise close to his house. A large Coast Guard Truck drove by, told him to get in, and said they would rescue him. But the chaplain said "no. I have prayed to the Lord, and He will save me." So the truck drove by to rescue others. Soon, the water flooded his home, and he was forced to climb to the second floor. Once again, he prayed to the Lord to save him. As he looked out his window, he saw a Coast Guard rescue boat floating up to his window. "Climb into the boat," they said, "and we will rescue you." But the Marine waved them off. "I have prayed to the Lord, and He will save me." As the waters continued to rise, he found himself sitting on the peak of his roof. He prayed once again to the Lord to save him. Right then, a Coast Guard helicopter was over him, lowering a rope. "Grab the rope and we will rescue you," they said. But once again, the old jar-head waved them off, saying. I have prayed to the Lord and he will save me." So the helicopter flew off to rescue others, but soon he was washed off the roof and drowned. Upon reaching the pearly gates, he soon found himself standing before the Almighty. But he was so upset that he yelled at the Lord, saying, "I prayed to you three times and still you let me die. Didn't you hear my prayers?" all Heaven shook as the Lord spoke, "Yes, I heard your prayers and I sent three contingents of Coast Guardsmen to rescue you, but you refused all three times.
You may have heard this story, but I told it a little differently. I know there are several Marines here, and I meant no disrespect—just a little humor. I respect and honor all who have served our country.
