Rowle was truly a good guy, from high school to the last time I saw him at the last reunion.

I knew Rollie, but not that well. From what I remember, he was one of the good guys.

Since I didn't know Rowle, I looked him up in the yearbook.  It showed he was on student council for three years, so apparently he was already honing his leadership skills.  Katie mentioned "a person dies twice, the first when their body leaves and the second the last time someone says their name."  Rowle will never die in that sense, since the Adult Center that was built when he was Mayor bears his name.  He leaves quite a legacy.   What a life well lived.

Katie, those whom we have lost still live on in our memory. My mother, father, siblings, and friends are still alive in my memory. You are correct. The way I heard it is a person dies the first time when their spirit leaves their body. They die the second time when no one remembers them—words of wisdom.

In the spirit of mentioning a former President of the United States who we hold close to our hearts and beliefs, I will (again) offer some quotes from Teddy Roosevelt who I respect as one of our greatest Presidents.  I have offered this quote on ASSIMILATION before.

"In the first place, we should insist that the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.  But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here.  Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all.  We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is loyalty to the American people."

Teddy Roosevelt was a patriot and a dreamer.  He loved America and Americans, and he staunchly defended America and its precepts.  With that in mind, the following short quote:

"No man is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man's permission when we require him to obey it.  Obediance to the law is demanded as a right; not asked as a favor.  It is true of the Nation, as of the individual, that the greatest doer must also be a great dreamer."

After reading these quotes, I can once again faithfully and without reservation say:

AMERICA FIRST!!  SECURE THE BORDER!!  ENFORCE THE LAW!!

Katie, interesting facts on where some of our sayings and words come from. I knew some of these, but not all. You must have spent some time researching some of these.

Thanks Katie!  I hadn't opened one of these pages in a while.  What a wonderful surprise to read your post.  With your permission I would like to copy it and send it to my grandchildren.  I'im forever sending them "Fact of the Day" and I know they would love it.

I'm a little late to the game but I heard from Bob Courtney who ives in Prescott that Rowle had moved to Colorado and might have been suffering with dementia.  Not sure this is true but I'm passing it on.

Seems many of us were fans of Paul Harvey. I remember this one well but probably laughed it off when he broadcast this the same year most of us graduated from high school and pretty much knew everything.

In 1965, Paul Harvey broadcasted “If I Were the Devil.” It is really amazing to realize 50 years ago how accurately he “prophesied” the future spiritual condition of the United States. Many of his statements were considered ridiculously outlandish at that time in history. Yet, we find ourselves today…

PAUL HARVEY’S ‘IF I WERE THE DEVIL’ TRANSCRIPT

If I were the devil … If I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d want to engulf the whole world in darkness. And I’d have a third of its real estate, and four-fifths of its population, but I wouldn’t be happy until I had seized the ripest apple on the tree — Thee.  So I’d set about however necessary to take over the United States. I’d subvert the churches first — I’d begin with a campaign of whispers. With the wisdom of a serpent, I would whisper to you as I whispered to Eve: ‘Do as you please.’

“To the young, I would whisper that ‘The Bible is a myth.’ I would convince them that man created God instead of the other way around. I would confide that what’s bad is good, and what’s good is ‘square.’ And the old, I would teach to pray, after me, ‘Our Father, which art in Washington…’

“And then I’d get organized. I’d educate authors in how to make lurid literature exciting, so that anything else would appear dull and uninteresting. I’d threaten TV with dirtier movies and vice versa. I’d pedal narcotics to whom I could. I’d sell alcohol to ladies and gentlemen of distinction. I’d tranquilize the rest with pills.

“If I were the devil I’d soon have families that war with themselves, churches at war with themselves, and nations at war with themselves; until each in its turn was consumed. And with promises of higher ratings I’d have mesmerizing media fanning the flames. If I were the devil I would encourage schools to refine young intellects, but neglect to discipline emotions — just let those run wild, until before you knew it, you’d have to have drug sniffing dogs and metal detectors at every schoolhouse door.

“Within a decade I’d have prisons overflowing, I’d have judges promoting pornography — soon I could evict God from the courthouse, then from the schoolhouse, and then from the houses of Congress. And in His own churches I would substitute psychology for religion, and deify science. I would lure priests and pastors into misusing boys and girls, and church money. If I were the devil I’d make the symbols of Easter an egg and the symbol of Christmas a bottle.

“If I were the devil I’d take from those who have, and give to those who want until I had killed the incentive of the ambitious.

And what do you bet I could get whole states to promote gambling as the way to get rich? I would caution against extremes and hard work in Patriotism, in moral conduct. I would convince the young that marriage is old-fashioned, that swinging is more fun, that what you see on the TV is the way to be. And thus, I could undress you in public, and I could lure you into bed with diseases for which there is no cure. In other words, if I were the devil I’d just keep right on doing what he’s doing.

Paul Harvey, good day.”

Lester, I was a big fan of Paul Harvey as well. I have that audio downloaded on my computer and listen to it now and then. It gives good insight into what is happening in the world today.

My Step-Grandfather, I never knew this until I had grown up, helped raise me, he was a real gentleman. He was a great example to me growing up. He was a Diesel Mechanic at Arizona Sand & Rock, in Tempe, Arizona, and maintained atll the Trucks, the conveyors, all Diesel Equipment. The Doctor told him after his Fourth Sunstroke, that another one was likely to Kill him, so he and my grandmother sold the three houses they owned and moved to Gunnison, Colorado. He had to because of heat, and so Gunnison, which was at 6000 feet in altitude, below freezing until mid-June, and started snowing again in mid-August. I spent some summers there, I remember waking up with it so cold that I had two Quilts on my Cot, and my Grandad stoking Coal in the :Pot Bellied Stove to warm up the house. My grandmother made Home Made Biscuits, and they got Eggs from  the local Farmers in the area in exchange for some of the Goods they sold in Hoyle's Variety on Main street in Gunnison. Back then the Farmers and Ranchers bought clothing, cloth, tools, and other things they needed at Hoyle's and exchanged Eggs, and Gold Coins, Silver Dollars,  Mercury head Dimes, Buffalo head Nickels, and copper Pennys dating clear back to when they were first made, to pay for the goods. My grandmother had grown up running stores since she had four brothers and was the oldest of all the siblings in her Family. My grandfather, Burge Hoyle, loved listening to Paul Harvey. Everyday seems like, and he would listen to Paul Harvey, and read the Bible. My grandfather believed in America. He believed if you could not work, you better cut down on your food intake. During the depression, he would not take a Government subsidized Job, he considered it Socialism and would not tolerate it.

When they moved to Gunnison, granddad gave up Diesel Mechanic work, and started buying and selling homes, today they call it "Fix and Flip:" and when I graduated High School, the next morning at 5 AM he asked me if I knew how to drive, I said not real good, he threw me the keys and said Good, your driving us to Delta, Colo. and I and your grandmother are  going to sleep until I get more sleep then you can wake me up and I'll take over. He taught me to Roof a House, Paint, do Carpentry, Pour Cement, do Electrical to Code, estimate buying Lumber and Shingles, he taught me to do it all, and I got real hands on experience, so that by the time I went back to Arizona in the Fall my hands were Caloused and I had Money in my Pocket because he paid me by the hour. Quiet Courage and Calm Strength, a God-Fearing Man. I needed that example back then. I am assured I will see that God Fearing Man again. Wnen I get Where I'm Going by Brad Paisley pretty much covers it.

Frank. Paul Harvey's home was on the East side of the Biltmore Cir. For a long time it was the largest in Biltmore except for Wrigley Mansion I'm pretty sure.

I was listening yesterday, or maybe the evening before that, and it was on Facebook and someone had Posted a Minister who has a British or Scottish accent, which captures the attention of us Norte Americaners because of the novelty of how they pronounce words, and emphasis they place on sentences, anyway, Alistair was speaking of how  people seem to Miss the Very Simplicity of the offer of Jesus Christ's Salvation. Its like an open Contract that allows you individually the Completion by way of Acceptance.Belief is affirmed by obedience.

So Alistair Begg said by way of Illustration  We have in the Bible the Thief on the Cross, crucified alongside Christ, and the Thief is at the Pearly Gates and an Angel is questioning him about how he came to be there, and the Angel asks him not a Series of Questions about what he believes such as whether he believes in the inerrancy of Scripture, or whether the Sacrament is symbolic or actually becomes the body and blood of Christ, No, the Angel asked the Thief "So why are you Here"? the Thief answered  'You know the Guy on the Middle Cross, He said I should Come"!

We can get all Tied Up with our own Failings and Regrets, Doubts, Shouda Coulda Woulda's, but Salvation is not the Rigors of obtaining a Doctorate in anything. The Thief showed up. That's it. Show Up.
