I met Rick in Miss Kanapstein  history class our junior year.  Rick was a very good friend who had a great sense of humor: I broke my nose in football practice and looked like a fruitfly with back and blue eyes and he knew I loved banana popsicles he would always tease me that the popsicle was my form of medication for my nose.  we laughed and laughed about it.  Rick was and is a very big guy in my eyes, he may of been small in stature but you'd never know it.  I had very few close friends but Rick was one of them.  Rick I still like banana popsicles, as much as having had the privilege of knowing you.

I was friends with Rick through elementary school at Monte Vista.  He was a very slight kid who suffered terribly from asthma.  We camped and played and were in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts together.  He had a wonderful sense of humor.  The only train I have ever ridden was with Rick from Phoenix to Wickenburg and back, but I don't remember when that was.  I was told of his death when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA in '68 or '69.  I heard he died alone at home from a bad asthma attack.  Rick was a good guy and I have thought of him often.  I believe his full name was Frederick Charles Horstmeyer, but we all just called him Ricky.

12/9/22  Thinking about you again today Hoss.

3/22/23   I nicknamed Ricky "Hoss Cartmeyer"....a take-off from Hoss Cartwright on Bonanza.  He thought that was funny.  Still miss you little buddy.  More now as time grows short.  See you again soon.  RIP.

I remember Rick from Monte Vista and what I remember most is his great smile.  He had a wonderful smile that would light up a room and I'm sure he smiled on days when the rest of us wouldn't be able to even crack a grin considering his health problems.
