Barry Norton

MAJ (Ret) Barry Douglas Norton, age 74 passed away on April 21, 2021 in San Diego, CA. He was born on December 27th, 1946 in Tucson, AZ to Robert and Lorraine (Shafer) Norton. At a young age Barry was a natural leader, and in 8th grade he was voted class president.

Barry started his military career in the Vietnam War, enlisting as an E1 in 1968. After returning from Vietnam, he attended Arizona State University and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing. He rejoined the Army shortly after as an O1, earned his Airborne wings, and continued his career in the Army National Guard. He served honorably, retiring in 1995. In honor of Barry’s service to his country, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (3), Army Achievement Medal (2), Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars, Army Service Ribbon, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Parachutist Badge, and Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation with Palm (2).

Barry’s experience in the military played a very important role in his life. He frequently pointed out that the Army taught him the value of discipline, teamwork, and investing in a cause larger than himself. He would often explain to loved ones the KISS principle and it would provide great perspective during life’s challenges.

He spent the later part of his life in Pacific Beach San Diego enjoying life’s simplicities: daily coffee with his many friends while handing out dog biscuits to his four legged friends, reading mystery novels, and occasionally drinking a Coors Banquet beer and listening to great music. He loved animals and they loved him too; they would often show up at his doorstep if they were injured or needed a home and he wouldn’t hesitate to take them in.

He was a loving father and caring friend. He was able to bring people together and he was someone you wanted to be around. He made many connections with lots of different people. His witty charm, great sense of humor and ability to simplify life’s toughest problems are sorely missed.

Barry was preceded in death by his father Robert (Bob) Norton, mother Lorraine Brunson and sister Carol Norton-Hill. He is survived by his sister Bonnie Creighton, 3 children: Holly Rynne, Derek Norton, Kelly Clark and 7 grandchildren.

Barry.  I knew you pretty well at Monte Vista, but lost track of you at Camelback.  You were always a good guy with a calm demeanor.  I'm sure you are missed by many.  Thank you for your service to our country.  God Bless.  RIP old friend.

I too knew Barry pretty well at Monte Vista. I also lost contact once at Camelback and beyond. We played baseball together. He was a good guy and Jim mentioned a clam demeanor. Tom Connelly would talk about meet up with Barry for a drink while staying on his boat in San Diego. As most know, Tom passed away a while back, 2 years maybe. Thanks Barry for your service and Rest In Peace.
