Nelson was born in Dallas, Texas on a hot June 25th night at home, as his mother Jinx’s firstborn! His father was in the Navy, at sea for his birth during WWII. It would be 15 months before William Senior laid eyes on his son, William Junior.
Soon a sister was added to the family, Lou Ann whom Nelson called Lou. They had a close loving relationship until her death several years ago. Nelson missed his sister greatly and talked about her often.
Nelson played baseball and football as a boy, and later moved on to Martial Arts as his sport of choice. Nelson was a good student, attending Lake Highlands High School, and later Eastfield College. He spent a good season backpacking through Europe until his homesickness was too much for him, and he came home and kissed the ground at Love Field Airport and threw himself back into earning his undergraduate degree in Speech Pathology.
Nelson made his first career in the Commercial Furniture Industry where he attained National Management responsibilities. Years later he had the courage to go back to school to attain his Masters Degree and attain his Licensed Professional Counseling status. He changed careers at this point and worked primarily on the E.A.P. side of Mental Health for many years.
Nelson’s years as a bachelor were interrupted during his 20th LHHS High School Reunion when he met Sydney, again! They fell in love and were married one year later, in the Chapel at Prestonwood Baptist Church on Arapaho, the original campus. Sydney’s sons were young men at this time, and they both walked her down the aisle, and into the arms of her soulmate and husband. Their 33-year marriage was strong and loving and real! Their faith in God was the core of their strength as a couple…
Later in life Nelson used his knowledge and skill as he and Sydney authored a Blended Family Study and Mentored married couples through the Revitalize Marriage Enrichment Classes at both campuses for their church, Prestonwood Baptist. They both had a passion for helping blended families, because of their own journey’s of navigating the sometimes-choppy waters of blending.
Nelson has three amazing step-brothers in this blend! Richie and Randy Logan and Brad Larsen who are here today to honor their brother. He loved these brothers and their families with a deep abiding love. Nelson loved his life with Sydney and their big blended family. He looked forward to family gatherings and celebrations, and enjoyed Sydney’s love of entertaining in their home. He opened his arms to four beautiful grandchildren, Makenzie, Jackson, Aubree and Landry. He was a faithful and loyal Step-Father to Adam and Aaron Lenhart, Sydney’s sons, and loving Uncle to Lauren Ghani his sister’s only child who is here today with us.
Nelson was a humble man, with a quick wit, who was well read and always striving to learn! He expressed his faith, which was deep, with morning devotionals, praying with Sydney, embracing her journey into all things Hebrew, and looked forward to their quiet Shabbat Dinners on Friday nights. Nelson was the most courageous man Sydney has ever known. He faced his disease day by day, loss by loss, with humility and acceptance. He embraced her care and that of others, as he needed more. He never fought his journey of PSP, but would say to Sydney: “Dahlin’ this is the stuff of life, please don’t cry”.
William Nelson Hewitt Jr. is now in the shadow of the Most-High, more alive today than ever before!
