Lawrence “Larry” Maggiacoma

Lawrence “Larry” Maggiacoma

Lawrence (Larry) Maggiacoma, age 81, passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He died on July 9, 2022 with his family near him. Larry was born on August 6, 1940 in New York City. He was the son of Julia Maggiacoma.

He served in the Army during the Vietnam War and later served in the Reserves. Larry had a diverse working career before becoming a high school history teacher. He worked for Pan America Airlines in NYC, Sun Chemical and Hanover Trust on Wall Street. Larry attended Hunter College in NY, and later McKendree College in Illinois, where he played baseball for them. His goal was to become a teacher. He moved to Tempe, Arizona to complete his teaching degree in 1966 with $37 in his pocket and a will to succeed.

He taught at Washington H.S. in the GUHS district and Glendale Community College. After a kidney transplant in 1997, he became a home-bound teacher for the district.

Larry had a great love of baseball and was a die-hard Yankee fan. He played in the Paradise Valley Church Softball League starting in 1976 until 1998.

Larry is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosalie, son Mark (Lenka) and extended family. He is fondly remembered by many loving cousins and close friends.

Larry was a lobbyist and animal rights activist. A donation to an animal organization of your choice in his memory would be a wonderful way to remember him.

The family is planning private services. (Hopefully) A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date.

I forgot all about Maggiacoma until the 55th reunion -- he talked my ear off. I do remember we shared a bond, and he brought them up: (a) we were both from New York (and therefore talked funny) (b) we were both New York Yankee fans. I don't remember much about high school, but I do remember a few things -- Maggiacoma was a great addition to the staff.

I never had Mr. Maggiocoma as a teacher, but I knew he was a well-respected educator.  I connected with him at the 55th reunion as well, sitting at the same table with him.  We had a very enjoyable discussion and much in common as well. Much respect to you, Larry.

Mr. Maggiacoma was one of my favorite teachers. He made History come alive with a breath of fresh air, his enthusiasm and animated pacing. He loved his job and his students. Attending his class was a high point in the day. Thank you and God bless you, Mr. Maggiacoma. See you later.
