In Memoriam

Stephen Paul Smith

Smith, Stephen P. 62 Aug. 21, 1948 Aug. 07, 2011 Steve went to Heaven Aug. 7, 2011, at home, surrounded by his family and friends. There was a need for levity and humor past the pearly gates and God knew Steve would fill the bill. Steve grew up in Phoenix, Ariz., and after two tours of duty in Vietnam, he went to work for Valley National Bank. His career spread over 21 years in various positions. After 42 years of living in the desert, he and his bride, Barbara, started a new life in Oregon. Steve worked for Key Bank and enjoyed what he referred to as "the best job in the world." Oregon was the perfect fit for Steve. He loved the green beauty of the Northwest and the quaintness of Manzanita. Growing up in the desert, he could never get enough of ocean fishing and catching prized salmon. Steve built great friendships with many of his customers before retiring in 2008. Retirement was short-lived, as he was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2009. After a successful liver transplant at OHSU, he lived life to the fullest until cancer returned and won the battle. Steve will forever be with everyone who loved him. He promised to hover around and keep an eye on things. He will always be with his best friend, Barbara; and sons, Justin and Josh Pattyn. He is also survived by his sister, Ronda (Larry) O'Neill; brother, Terry (Lori) Smith; and niece and nephew, Erin O'Neill and Brian O'Neill. Steve's faith and humor allowed him to show us how to gracefully face death. He requested a beautiful Catholic funeral at his parish, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverton. The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, followed by a reception at the church. If desired, memorials may be sent to Sisters of the Road, 133 N.W. 6th Ave., Portland, OR 97209. Arrangements entrusted to Springer and Son Aloha Funeral Home, 503-356-1000. - See more at: http://obits.oregonlive.com/obituaries/oregon/obituary.aspx?n=stephen-p-smith&pid=153016013&fhid=10083#sthash.yWKj9mOV.dpuf
