Nancy Lyla Harris McGregor Walker

June 2, 1944 to April 20, 2018

Nancy Lyla Harris McGregor Walker passed away peacefully in Rancho Mirage, CA on April 20, 2018.  She was born (formerly Nancy Lyla Harris) in Oakland, CA on June 2, 1944 to Muriel Pierce Harris and William J. Harris, Sr., both of whom predeceased her. Nancy grew up in Piedmont, CA and attended Piedmont Elementary, Junior and Senior High School.  Upon graduation from Piedmont High School in 1962, she attended San Francisco State University for two years before immersing herself in music as a folk singer / guitarist.  Nancy’s blend of folk and Christian music developed into a professional career on club stages in the San Francisco Bay Area as well as television in Canada.

Nancy married Donald McGregor of Saskatchewan, Canada in November, 1967, which led to three children and raising a family in Oakland, CA for over thirty years.  Nancy continued her singing and guitar playing for her children’s schools as well as her Christian music affiliations.  Nancy also enjoyed traveling with her family on road trips throughout the country and taking cruises to Mexico and Ecuador.  Nancy re-married in 2015 to Jeffrey Walker of Desert Hot Springs, CA and relocated to Rosarito, Mexico where she and her husband built a beautiful home near the beach.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Walker of Rosarito, Mexico, her three daughters, Suzie McGregor Arnold (Clayton Arnold) of San Ramon, CA, Megan McGregor Arnold (Dustin Arnold) of Eugene, OR and Lauren McGregor of Atlanta, GA along with two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Addison.  She is also survived by her sisters, Susan Parsons of Rancho Mirage, CA, Jane McFarland of El Sobrante, CA and her brother, William Harris, Jr, of Yucaipa, CA as well as her many cousins located in California, Oregon, Wisconsin and Canada.

We will all miss Nancy.

Nancy and Susan and I and Jack Morrisson grew up within a few hundred yards of one another and I can remember the pleasant feeling of warmth that Nancy radiated on all occasions. The little I know of Nancy's adult life was that she married and for a number of years lived with her family in proximity to the Round Hills Country Club. Nancy had a winning smile and a welcoming spirit and the closeness between Nancy and her sister Susan was both inescapable and heartwarming. To me Nancy symbolizes the more carefree and pleasurable days of friendship and camaraderie of our shared environs that defined our growing up in happier times. RIP Nancy. You were one of a kind.

I remember Nancy's energy and grace from our 50th reunion in San Francisco.  (I believe she was one of the planners.)  She was a very intelligent, get things done, and cordial lady, and will be greatly missed.  We had several discussions at PHS about many subjects of life and its details.  Too early!  Godspeed, Nancy.

Dear Susan,  I am so sorry to learn of Nancy's passing.  I'll always remember the fun we had had as elementary school kids playing together.  I saw Nancy at San Francisco State and had the joy of listening to her sing and play the guitar.  I am thinking of you.  Sincerely, Ann

Dear Susan - I was surprised and saddened to hear of Nancy's passing.  So many memories over the years from the days before starting elementary school, to Wildwood school, through summer play, weeks in the mountains, visits to see MeMe, Piedmont High School and beyond.  Our parents and families were good friends over the years, and there is so much that connects us.  It has been too long.  Please get in touch as my contact information for you no longer works.  I'm so sorry or your loss.  Betsy
