Jane passed away on March 25, 2004, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. Carolyn Sanford Kortge was kind enough to share a few memories of Jane back at the end of March ... "Janie and I were friends before we were a 'twinkle in our father's eyes.' In the early years McCarthys and Sanfords recreationed together at Rio Nido [and] Pinecrest. The memories of her are engulfing me this week and bring me much sadness but great joy as well. What a super person she was and what great stories I could tell."

Jane married Sam Stevens, also a member of our class on September 12, 1970 and the two raised a family. Jane was an avid outdoor enthusiast, playing in a co-ed soccer league, kayaking, and gardening. She was instrumental in helping form CASA of Santa Cruz County and served on the Juvenile Justice Commission. Jane is survived by her husband Sam, her daughter Jessie, her sons, Will and Charlie, two sisters and four grandchildren. I will miss Jane as we all will, because she was a cheering presence in my life for many years, from earliest memory to the end. of my years at Cal. We will all miss Jane and send our condolences to Sam and the family.
