I attended Menlo College in Menlo Park, CA. I was doing well in my classes, even played on the football team for two seasons, but the Vietnam War hung over me like a dark cloud. I decided to join the military, left school, and joined the Coast Guard Reserve in January, 1968. When I finished active duty I went to Oakland City College, where I made up enough credits to attend UC Berkeley.

At Berkeley I studied Sociology, but also took an interest in the arts - painting, music, etc. I've always been drawn to athletics (that's primarily how I navigated through high school), and rhythm has also been a part of my soul. Dance was a new art form that appealed to me. I took it seriously enough to participate in a number of performances. When I graduated, I went directly to New York, to study with a modern dance icon, Merce Cunningham.

I studied there for two years and felt like I was spinning my wheels, not going anywhere. Mike Burns and I got together, and concocted a travel plan. We went to India. After a couple of weeks Mike returned to the States, but I continued to travel around India for about three months.

When I came home, I mulled around for awhile, working as a waiter in local restaurants, and eventually moved back east to Vermont. I lived there for three years and then moved to Boston, MA.

There in Boston, I met my wife, who's from Indiana, and who was living and working in the city. We fell in love and decided to move back to Bloomington, Indiana, and enroll in grad school programs.

In 1986, we moved to Fort Worth, TX. I taught middle school math, and coached track and basketball for 27 years until I retired in June, 2013. We have one lovely daughter, Natalie, who is 27, graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Studio Art, and is living and working in Dallas.

School Story

Menlo College, 9/66-1/68; Oakland City College, 9/68-12/68; UC Berkeley, BA Sociology, 1/69-6/71; Indiana University, MS Physical Education, 9/81-6/83.

Happy belated birthday, Dan. It must have been a tough one with the aftermath of Harvey. Thinking of you and hope you and your family made it through it all right.

Fred, I'm really glad we got to see each other and talk a bit at the reunion and the PHS tour. 50 years! See you at the next one?

It is actually the 29th here in New Jersey, but is still the 28th in Texas...I think.I just wanted to make sure I wished you a very happy birthday!

It was just wonderful to see you at our reunion! Best wishes for a great year ahead!

Jo Ann, thank you very much for your birthday message. I still think birthdays are fun, even if nothing is planned. So, you're very familiar with the Dallas/Fort Worth area. There's a lot to like isn't there. I'm not a fan of the long stretches of 100 degree days of summer, but for maybe eight months of the year the weather is great. Fort Worth is a manageable city. Terrific museums. Pretty downtown. Rockwall is not far. An open invitation for lunch when you visit.

Cindy, thank you for the birthday wishes. Very sweet of you and I appreciate it. Seems like the last time we communicated Texas was experiencing severe drought conditions. Well, I'm pleased to announce the drought is officially over. Well....kinda. Anyway, happy belated birthday to you as well! See you soon.

Leslie, very nice birthday wish...All year Long! You and the reunion committee have set an extraordinary standard of energy and organization in your efforts to get this thing rolling. I raise my glass to all of you. Having said that, I see your fingerprints in every activity, every proposal, and every decision. Your involvement is very special. I wish you the best!

Thanks for the birthday wish Mr. Burrows. I want to tell you...there are a lot of tall people here in Texas. And they wear boots to make themselves taller! I used to be 6' 2 7/8'. I'm now right around 6'. Whatever! Happy belated birthday to you as well!

Thanks for the message John! Happy belated birthday to you as well. I loved your account of the 600 mile bicycle trip in response to Mike's email invitation. Brought a smile to my face. And, your tribute to Terry is very thoughtful. Not sure I trust my memories, but I think you and Terry were some of my first real friends when I moved to Piedmont from Wisconsin in 1957. Anyway, cheers to you! Stay healthy! See you soon!
