Douglas Edison Shangreaux

Douglas E. Shangreaux, 60, Las Vegas, NV, died of a brain aneurysm on Monday, November 18, 2002.

Services were held at Palm Mortuary in Las Vegas on November 22.  Interment took place in Las Vegas with full Metropolitan Police Rites conducted  with an honor guard, including a 21-gun salute.

Douglas Edison Shangreaux was born Feb. 6, 1942 in Pierre to Desmond and Edna (McMurtrey) Shangreaux.  He was the sixth of nine children.

He grew up in Pierre, graduating from T.F. Riggs High School in 1960.  While in high school, he lettered in football, basketball and track and was named to the All State football team his senior year.  He was also the homecoming marshall his senior year.  After graduating from high school, he attended South Dakota State University on a football scholarship.

In 1961 he married Gloria Job of Pierre.  To this marriage two children were born.  They later moved to Anaheim, CA., where he was employed by Mobil Oil Company in its public relations department.  He was later transferred to Las Vegas where he served in the same capacity.

As a child Doug, had dreamed of being a policeman.  In 1976 that dream became a reality when he entered what then was the Clark County Sheriff Academy.  It later became the Metropolitan Police Academy, encompassing all of Clark County, NV, which included Las Vegas.

After graduating from the academy, he served as a patrol car officer.  He later served with the motorcycle patrol division.  He was ultimately promoted to the metropolitan undercover vice squad as an officer where he served until his retirement in July 2000.

In 1983, Doug married Cynthia Witcher of Las Vegas.  To their marriage, two children were born.

Survivors include his wife Cynthia; three daughters, Angela Cole and her husband Cal, Desiree Hughes and her husband Lynn, and Ashley Shangreaux and one son, Cody Shangreaux, all of Las Vegas; four sisters, Jackie Anderson and her husband Bob of Hemet, Calif., Beverly LaGrave of Albuqerque, N.M., Barbara Tillman and her husband Wayne of Pierre, and Margaret Kayser and her husband Dennis of Pierre; three brothers, John Shangreaux and his wife Shirley of Las Cruces,  N.M., Rich Shangreaux and his wife Lori of Pierre and Terry Shangreaux and his wife Linda of Santa Cruz, Calif; seven grandchildren; and many neices and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by a baby sister in 1953, his father in 1960 and his mother in 2000.
