Downtown Posted Friday, July 17, 2015 03:24 AM After a movie at the Clementon movies, one had to make certain decisions: Do I go to the "Sweet Shop" to see who is hanging out there? Or, do I go to the "Triangle" to see who is hanging out there? Or, do I go to "Petes" on the outside chance I'd get one of the two round seats and have a Cherry Coke? Do I avoid them all because the big kids might bully me? Maybe I should go toward the Triangle and have Ted, the handicapped taxi driver take me home for what? A dollar? Or, maybe I'd call home from the phone booth, dialing, "Laurel Springs 4 - 0424" in the hope my Dad, or one of my brothers or one of my sisters who drove could come pick me up? Or, maybe some one else's Mom or Dad who showed up to pick up their kids would give me a ride? Hey, I could walk on over to Clementon Lake Park. I had just enough money to play a round of miniature golf. Wow, there is the new Phillips Drug store, right next to that little Episcopal Church...the church were my neiborhood buddy, Ricky Jones use to go because he was an Alter Boy. Which reminds me, my Mom is going to expect me to go to Sunday School at St. Pauls Prebyterian in Laurel Springs. That tall, skinny, white haired, dressed in black Rev Schalk use to scare the hell out of me. Well, I'll just walk home. Straight up Gibbsboro Road; passed Dr. Laboves office; Doreen LItty's house; Debra what's-her-names house; cross the Pike at the Bellvue Diner; passed Falatoes custard shop; passed the stocking factory and Doms barbershop, past Danny Mattie's street; passed Harry's Market; passed the airport on one side and Silver Lake Inn on the other; passed the Airport Cleaners; some nameless lake; passed Reed Avenue; passed the Lucky Horseshoe Tavern and home. A nice day in Downtown Clementon. Fred Kline |
