Michael Yost

                           Rest in Peace, Mr. Yost

Dr. Michael Yost, Jr. died May 17, 2014, in San Antonio, Texas. Born July 10, 1933, in Glendora, New Jersey, he was the only child of Michael Peter Yost and Regina Theresa Harbison Yost. Dr. Yost was a university administrator, educator, statistician, and consultant. From 1971 to 1997 he was at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and held the positions of Assistant to the President, Director of Institutional Research, and Professor. Michael spent most of his childhood years in southern New Jersey about ten miles east of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended primary and secondary schools there. Michael also spent many happy days with his family at the shore near Cape May, New Jersey, at the very southern tip of the state, on the Delaware Bay, where he was an avid boater and strong swimmer and developed an interest in sailing. After high school Michael served four years in the United States Air Force. Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the service in August of 1956, he completed his undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate degrees. Michael earned his bachelor's degree (B.A., zoology) in 2 ½ years at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina, his master's degree (M.Ed., physics) at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus, in State College, Pennsylvania, and his doctorate (Ph.D., applied multivariate statistics) at Nova University, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. During his professional career, he taught and was a department chairman in schools and colleges in North Carolina, Florida, and New Jersey. In 1967, Michael was a Smithsonian Research Fellow in Washington, D.C. In 1970 he accepted a position as a research associate at UMREL (Upper Midwest Regional Educational Laboratory), a think tank funded by the U.S. Department of Education in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. While there he received a Merit Award for Outstanding Contributions to Education by Behavioral Research Laboratories. In 1971 he accepted a faculty position at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, as a Professor of Education. In 1982 Michael was asked to serve as the Assistant to the President and Director of Institutional Research at Trinity, a position which he held until he retired in December of 1997. At the time of his death, Dr. Yost was a Professor Emeritus at Trinity. Dr. Yost was the author and co-author of several books and over 150 articles which dealt with methodological and statistical applications which appeared in numerous juried journals. He made numerous professional presentations in the United States and in Europe and was also a consultant to several universities and school districts and a number of corporations, law firms, banks, businesses, cities, and city entities. Michael was obviously a man of many talents. Besides being blessed with a superb intellect, he was a gifted athlete, a gourmet cook (known for his homemade bread and special desserts), and a master craftsman in woodworking. In 1976-1977 he built a 25-ft. trimaran (multihull sailboat) which he launched and kept at Canyon Lake, Texas. He especially enjoyed traveling, sailing, golfing, cooking, spending time with friends, trips to Paris, and his black Labrador Retrievers. After retirement, Michael enjoyed dividing his time between San Antonio, Texas, and Santa Barbara, California. His greatest pleasure was enjoying the beach, the harbor, the mountains, and the beautiful sunsets in sunny Southern California with his wife Elizabeth. Dr. Yost was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Yost is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Elizabeth Kines Yost.
