FARTHING HAKIM A., on August 10, 2002, United States Park Police officer killed in the line of duty. He is survived by his son, Eric Joseph, his parents, James and Nancy Farthing, a sister, Eshe-Ayo Audrey Farthing, 2 grandmothers, Audrey M. Farthing and Gertrude Capers. He is also survived by his uncle, Joseph B. Farthing, along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and loved ones. Visitation will be held Thursday, August 15, 2002 from 7 to 9 P.M. at Immanuel Bible Church, 6911 Braddock Road, Springfield, VA, where services will be held on Friday, August 16, 2002 at 10 A.M. A second visitation will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2002 from 10 A.Mto 12 P.M. at White Rock Baptist Church, 5240 Chestnut St, West Phila., PA where funeral services will begin at 12 noon. Officer Hakim Farthing was struck and killed by a drunk driver while assisting at the scene of another accident on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway at 0330 hours.
Officers were investigating an earlier fatal accident and Officer Farthing had closed the New York Avenue exit ramp from the Parkway in Hyattsville, Maryland just north of the Washington, DC border. The drunk driver drove through cones and flares, struck Officer Farthing, killing him instantly, and then continued 2000 feet before being stopped by other officers who witnessed the incident. A Maryland State Police helicopter that was already overhead landed and a paramedic immediately attended to Officer Farthing.
The drunk driver pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, driving under the influence, and reckless driving. She was sentenced to five years in prison.
Officer Farthing was a U.S. Army veteran and had been employed with the United States Park Police for two years. He is survived by his young son and parents.
