In Memory

William C. Sterner

William C. Sterner died Mar. 31, 2008 of a massive coronary in Bolder, CO.  He was the beloved husband of Patricia Brownell Sterner, loving father to Gillian, Jeffrey, Brian, and Cristen, adored grandfather of Jack and Preslie Anne.

He was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA by William and Dorothea Sterner.  Bill enjoyed a happy upbringing as the youngest of four children.  Upon graduation from Duquesne Univ. in 1962, Bill joined the Peace Corps, where he served in Ecuador, Venezuela, and Columbia helping villagers set up financial cooperatives.

A long career in credit unions culminated in his position as CEO of Elevations Credit Union in Bolder and Chair of the Credit Union of Colorado.  Bill was also a respected community leader, serving on the Boulder Economic Council and on the board of the Community Foundation Serving Bolder County.

Bill's life focus, though, was his family.  He raised four wonderful children, who he inspired but also inspired him to balance his successes as a business leader with his duties as a father.  Bill was cherished by his wife, Pat, with whom he traveled the globe in search of good wine, local foods and great adventures,  Bill was a generous man who loved a good joke and was always quick to tell a bad one.  Most of all, Bill Sterner lived his life in service to others and leaves a legacy of selflessness that will be carried on by his family, his colleagues, and his friends.  Bill will be terribly missed and most lovingly remembered.

Bill is survived by his wife;  his four children;  his two grandchildren;  his three sisters anne, Katie and Judy;  many nephews and nieces;  and his faithful dog, touser.

Ahhh, that makes me very sad. I was so looking forward to catching up with Bill again. We were preschool friends and loved to go to the victory garden we had out at his place. Our mothers were best friends until his father got mad and wouldn't let Dot see or talk to my Mom. I think he taught me how to be a tom boy and get dirty even in my best dress! He was one of my highlights of the last reunion. Babs

Bill was my first date. We walked in the snow from my house on Beverly Road to the Hollywood Theater.

Rest in Peace, Bill

So very sorry to hear about Bill. I was looking forward to seeing him this September. He really had the most beautiful smile...it could light up a room! He will be missed.

This is so sad. I went through St. Bernard's with him. He lived up the street from me and he, his sisters and I went sledriding next to his house where the Bower Hill Apartments are now. I remember going into his kitchen when his mom was baking bread and his sister, Judy, gave me a slice right after it came out of the oven. I remember a warm loving family. He will be missed.

I didn't know Bill very well, but I did know that he was a tough individual. Bill and I took Stragetic Geography together down in the dark lower hall. One day, Bill must have acted up and Mr. ?? (I can't think of his name and I don't have a Log handy), a big guy invited Bill out to the hall for a little talk. The next thing we heard was a lot of yelling by the teacher and then a loud bang as Bill went flying up against the metal lockers. Shortly thereafter, they came in and we continued our discussion about raising cotton in India or something like that.
