Nancy Mae Maxson

Barbara (MtL 1957), Nancy's sister, has informed us that Nancy died of cancer in Sept. 2005. Her married name was Russell and lived in a suburb of Los Angles, CA called Manhattan Beach.  She had one son named Eric.  She was 64 when she died.  She was born 3-24-1941.

I talked with Nancy's sister this morning (10-4-09) and she gave me a brief bio of Nancy. The Maxson family (Barbara '57, Nancy '59, Ken '61) moved to MtL in 1952 and Nancy went to 6th grade at Lincoln. They moved to Sage and lived next door to Linda Poole. Nancy went to the College of Wooster (OH) and majored in elem. ed. Came back briefly after college, married, and had a son, Erik, in 1964. Went out to CA and spent most of the rest of her life teaching 2nd grade in the LA Public School System and raising her son. Erik still lives in Manhattan Beach.

Nancy Maxson became a good friend when she moved to Mt.Lebanon and came to Lincoln School in 6th grade. I have many happy and wonderful memories of being/playing at their home, prior to their move to Sage Dr. Nancy's family was "fun" to be with and always made me feel welcome. Saddly, our friendship dwindled as we got older. When the "Mt. Lebo Site" was available for our 50th reunion, her name was one of the first I looked for, now, I know why her name was not there.

Thank you Penny for providing information about Nancy.

God Bless her and those left behind to mourn her loss.

Fondly, Susan Doubles

On December 17, 1960, my wedding day to Bob Wright '57, Nancy was my Maid of Honor.

About noon I went downtown Pittsburgh to pick up a piece of jewelry which I had had made from a pin of my great grandmother's into a necklace to be the "old" to wear at my wedding.

The wedding was at 4:00.  (Superstition--never get married on the 'downsweep' hand of the clock--bad luck.  Always get married on the upsweep of the hand of the clock, '--:30+' of the clock for good luck.)

I left at noon for the short trip to town.  Unfortunately, it started to snow on the way back.  Traffic backed up...stopped.  I think I was in Brookline when I took an unknown-to-me side road to circumvent the blockage.  The side road was [literally] a "yellow brick road"--glazed yellow bricks, no snow tires, not much traction. I made it home about 3:00.

Mothers were fit to be tied.  Mine because I was not there, Max's mom because she had sent the Maid-of-Honor-Dress to the cleaner's a few days before to be pressed, and because of the snow the cleaner's delivery truck was running late.  They said they would deliver the dress by 5:00.

I (calmly???) brushed my hair, applied lipstick, mascara, eyebrow pencil, picked up my dress and veil, and fifteen minutes later our next-door neighbor, Don Dalton, Sr., drove me and my parents to the Mt. Lebanon Presbyterian Church on Washington Road, where I changed into my wedding dress and proceeded to be married, about 4:25.  John Connelly '57, Bob's Best Man (Grant Connelly's older brother), and Max, (in the dress, which was retrieved by Max's parents chasing down the delivery truck*) were there, along with family members and guests.

*Remember this was in the 1950's...no cell phones, only land lines with cords attached to the wall.
