Dave Simon moved to Pittsford from Conneticut our sophomore year. We became friends through athletics at first. Dave was a great athelete. He excelled in football and baseball but was also a very good basketball player. Dave also had a great sense of humor and was quite the kidder! He loved to laugh and make others do the same . Another reason he fit right in with the gang.
Dave got injured during a scrimmage football game our senior year and had to miss the entire season with a broken ankle. He would have started at the defensive cornerback position.
If you've ever seen the senior movie we filmed towards the end of our senior year, Dave is featured interviewing and commenting through much of the film. He was quite confident and well spoken.
Dave was also an excellent student and went to Duke University with ambitions of becoming a dentist. There is no doubt he would have made it and been very good at the profession. But it was not to be.
When I first heard that Dave had a tumor that had to be removed, I really did not think much of it. At that age, you don't think about dying. That was for much later for all of us. Even when he and I discussed our faith in God and learning to trust in Him, I still had no thought of him dying. When he got sick again I thought it was just another little set back and that he would be fine with treatment. Again, dying is for old people I thought. When he did pass I was surprised. It made me wish I had spent more time with him in his dying days. Had some more heart to hearts. I learned a little about taking relationships for granted.
A group of us stopped at his parents house off of Thornell Rd. at the time of the 30th and they were happy to see us and chat although it seemed like they did not want to talk about Dave. Too painful I'm sure to have those emotions surface again. I pray I never have to experience losing a child. Of course Dave will live on in our memories and I'm sure we will share a story or two and certainly some laughs the next time the old gang gets together again.
