Cindy was a classmate whom I knew a long time. The thing I appreciated about her was not only her calm, sweet personality, but her consistency. She always treated you the same way, never being your friend one minute but not the next. She had a steadiness of character that was an example to all.
Today, 6/18/10, is the one year anniversary of when Cindy died. I have so many wonderful memories of her. To this day I am amazed that we graduated. I guess that Barney Newton and Sherman Millender just didn't think they were up to another year of us. I'm also amazed that we had any hair as we bleached it out on a regular basis. Hers was Revlon's White Wine and mine was Norwegian Blonde. We got in so much trouble for putting so many miles on my dad's Dodge Dart. Finally we figured out that if we drove through the Dairy Queen parking lot that one of the older guys would know how to unhook the speedometer. We just had to remember to drive back through before we went home. Even though I was a lot taller than Cindy we frequently wore each other's clothes. I remember one night we were at an American Legion hall somewhere (maybe listening to Johnny and Jerry's band play) and we decided to exchange clothes in the bathroom. She was in the stall next to me so when she took off her dress she threw it over the top into my stall. I was supposed to throw mine over to her. However, I didn't. Rather I left the bathroom with both her clothes and mine. I'm still laughing about that one. Then there was the night that we were going to sneak out and toilet paper David Wood's house. For some reason we were going to go out the window rather than the front door. But after taking the screen off we wised up and just went to bed. The next morning my dad woke us up to say that he had called the police as someone had obviously tried to break into our house. I came clean on that one....about 5 years ago. We remained friends all through the years and up until her dad died, she would stop by my office and get me to come out to the car to give Buddy a hug. He still called me "Son", a throwback to my senior year when I cut my hair short. I miss Cindy very much and think about her every day. She was a wonderful, tender-hearted, loving person.
