I ran into Mike at the old Montgomery Wards shopping center in 1970 after I had gotten out of the Air Force. He was standing with his back to me looking in the window of the store. I playfully stuck my finger in the small of his back only to find there was a gun there. I said to him Jackson this is Al Baggett and that's my finger and I backed away. He and I talked for awhile and he told me he was a Marshall, don't remember if it was state or US. Does anyone know if he was killed in the line of duty? He was a soft spoken nice guy, RIP.
The only kind of "state" marshals California has are Fire Marshals, so it was almost certainly US Marshals Service, the oldest law enforcement agency in the country, with a very proud record...they were in the front lines in the Civil Rights movement, protecting students going in to schools being integrated.
A check through the list of US Marshals who died in the line of duty [http://www.usmarshals.gov/history/roll_call.htm] does not show anyone named Jackson, so Mike must have died from some other cause.
Albert (Al) Baggett
