After a very short battle with cancer, Marie Sommer Key, of Sarasota, Fla., previously of Ridgefield and Redding, Conn, and Scarsdale, N.Y., passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2012 alongside her loving family members in Katy, Texas.
Marie was born in Bronxville, N.Y in 1946 to the late Emil Sommer Jr., and Elizabeth O'Brien Sommer. She grew up in Armonk, N.Y., and married Stephen Key in August 1968. They resided in Brooklyn, later moving to Hartsdale, N.Y., and Scarsdale, N.Y. She is survived by her ex-husband, Stephen Key of Providence, R.I.; daughter, Samantha Burke and her husband Lawrence Burke of Katy, Texas; son Alexander Key and his wife Samanta of Holmes, N.Y.; son Spencer Key and his wife Jenanne of Scottsdale, Ariz.; grandchildren Juliette and Fiona; and two brothers, Emil and Peter Sommer.
Marie graduated from Green Mountain College and received her associate's degree in liberal arts. She then attended Ohio State University.
She was very active in the communities she lived in, particularly in the nonprofit world. She served as president of the Junior League of Scarsdale, and worked with the Lighthouse for the Blind. Additionally, she was director, senior services in Wilton, Conn., Ridgefield, Conn., and Sarasota, Fla. She was, by calling, a professional volunteer.
Marie was a warm, compassionate, outgoing woman with a terrific sense of humor, an infectious smile, and a willing ear. Everyone she met was drawn to her energy, and invariably into a poignant conversation as well. By those who were fortunate enough to know her, she is already missed.
A celebration of her life will be held privately by her family.
