In Memory

Louise Schofield

Louise passed away last Tuesday, August 24 at Yale New Haven Hospital following a brain aneurism. She lived in New Milford, CT.  For many years she worked for the Guiding Eye Foundation and continued on as a volunteer after retirement.  For relaxation she enjoyed being a member of The Kent Singers (see them on FB).  One of Louise's great joys was her golden retriever, Maggie. ( I have learned that her brother Mark and his wife have adopted Maggie. What a great comfort that would have been to Louise!) No service is planned at this time, but there may be a memorial in New Milford at a later date. Will keep you posted if we learn more.

Louise  did not  graduate with us as she headed off to private school late in high school. However, she was with us from Bedford Road School days through to the PHS years.  I can still remember how neat it was when she brought her taxidermy collection to school for 3rd grade "Show & Tell" in Miss Wager's class. I also remember she was part of the infamous Troop 23 .

I'm very sad to learn of Louise's death but grateful to her brother, Mark, for being in touch and answering my questions. It's been such a long time since I've seen her. We go all the way back to Mrs. Bell's nursery school on Clark Street. Louise lived just up the street from there. Louise had a fine sense of humor...very dry...and great spirit. If memory serves, we were together in Mrs. Fox's class in 6th grade which renewed our friendship. Her love of animals was always present. Mark has adopted her dog. May she rest in peace and may her family feel the support from friends and those of us who remember her so well.

Louise and I became friends when we were in Mrs. Fox's class.  I'd come over from Roselle Avenue School for the 5th grade...  We found that we were both horse mad.  We'd concocted a plan (never executed!) that we could get a horse to 'share' - one week it would live in her garage, and the next week in mine!  I lost touch with her when she went off to private school but have happy memories of sharing a love of horses.

I became good friends with Louise in 5th grade, when I moved to Bedford Road from Roselle.  I think we were in Mrs. Eggleston's class together, along with Anne Valentine (Duncan).  We spent a lot of time together at each other's houses.  One random memory was often making tuna sandwiches together but separately, as she liked lots of relish, and I like mayo! We laughed abou that as we made our lunches.  We ran a lot when we were together. At her house it was in and around the big ball field behind their property, at mine it was in the woods and up and down hills, and included swinging on the huge vines in a neighboring vacant lot..  Another memory was of getting together with Anne and playing music from our little band books on our flutes and clarinets.  Those gatherings always ended up in laughter as well.  By the time we were in junior high, our closeness had dwindled.  She invited me a few times to visit with her relatives in Connecticut, but I never went.  I wonder what adventures and laughter I missed.  We lost touch after she left our schools.  I am sad.  Rest in peace, Louise.
