Sue awed me in first grade with her ability to climb hand over hand up the slanting support pole of the tall swings. But by high school it was her intelligence and humor and originality that awed me. I remember how hard Mr. Beelen tried to convince her to go to college, as he had been the first in his family to go. Even though she decided on another course herself, she clearly passed on her smarts and drive to her children.
By some sad coincidence, I was thinking of her on Friday and wanting to tell her that I still had the toast-tight (an odd kitchen gadget that made wonderful toasty sandwiches) that she and her mother gave me at graduation--probably because I had eaten so many of those little sandwiches once in her kitchen. And then on Saturday I got Chuck's email.

Many fond memories.
