NEW--7/20/11--Going back to the very beginning: Where'd you go to elementary school? What about recess and the games we played? Did you walk to school? Did you take your lunch? Did you go to recreation after school? How did you fill your summers?

I started at Arroyo Elementary School when it was just a single building (which has since been moved and restored/preserved as an historical site). I remember walking to school through the orange groves along Arroyo, occasionally picking a few. My little black cocker spaniel, Paula, would escape and follow me to school and come in to lay by me during nap time - kindergarten. Luckily my parents were friends with the dog catcher who either brought her home or I would have to walk her home.

In fourth grade I was transferred to Roosevelt Elementary. I had 3 good years there then headed to Marshall Jr. High, then Ganesha.

NEW--7/20/11--We never outgrow our youth, Part 1. Remember starting Junior High School? We got lockers for books and PE, going to a six period day, sock hops in gym, co-ed PE on Fridays when the guys and girls had to dance together? Do you remember all the new people you had to interact with? How about taken a shower in PE? What about J-Teen dances? What are your memories of that time?

Jr. High was such a transition. I liked high school much better.

NEW--7/20/11--We never outgrow our youth, Part 2. When we got to high school, we had to start over at the bottom of the pile again as sophomores. Remember those "big" kids driving cars to school? Having classes with those giant juniors and seniors? How about all those sports? What about the theater arts and music departments and their productions? What do YOU remember?

Looking back, I am most thankful for the few long term friendships that I made. It has also been good to reconnect with friends via Facebook.

What’s your favorite memory of Ganesha HS?

A Latin Club trip to L.A. in the rain, by school bus, to see Cleopatra when it opened at The Pantages Theater I think, and then on to China Town afterwards for dinner and roaming.

This is not a Ganesha memory necessarily, but I loved to go to Newport Beach with my girlfriends, especially in my father's old Lincoln Continental which we had to fill with gas on the way there and on the way back (25 cents a gallon), or my friend Jean's red Chevy convertible.

Least favorite memory?

The day I was waiting with my friend, Sandy Chesney, out front of Ganesha on the bench for her father to pick her up. He never showed up so I took her home with me. We learned later that evening that her father's convertible had rolled and he had been killed. That memory has stayed with me all of these years. I found out not too long ago that Sandy lives in Stockton (a few hours drive from Monterey) and we are going to reunite one day soon - I promise, Sandy!

Favorite teacher?

Mrs. Anderson, Latin; Mr. George, Art,

NEW--7/20/11--Remember learning to drive and earning your passport to freedom? Did you take Driver's Ed in school? Did you pass the driving test the first time you took it?

No driver's ed, my father taught me. I was at the DMV on my 16th birthday to get my license.

NEW--7/20/11--Remember your first accident and your first ticket? Tell us what how they happened.

My first accident happened when Paula Weaver and I decided to skip school - Mt. Sac - and drove to the the top of Mt. Baldy in my Mother's black Rambler. Coming down a hill, having no experience driving in snow and ice, I was the last car in a chain of rear enders. I slammed on the brakes and slid right into the car in front of me. The radiator was damaged, had a hole on it, but we managed toile it down to Henry's where I called my father to come get us. My dad fixed it - he could fix anything.

My second almost accident was in the same car. I had just bought a pineapple milkshake at Foster's Freeze, was driving home with the shake in one hand, trying to shift gears with the other, when the front bolts came loose from my seat. I ended up in the backseat, the shake was all over, but I was able to right the seat, lean forward so it wouldn't flip back again, and make it the rest of the way home. My father fixed it again. I loved that car - it looked like an upside down bathtub! Shiny black with red interior.

My first ticket was a minor fender bender in the rain. I hit someone and the policeman asked me out. Actually I didn't get a ticket.

NEW--7/20/11--Remember your first wheels? What were they and how did you get them? (If you have a picture, please post one in the Photo Gallery/My First Car)

My first car was a 1966 powder blue Mustang which I bought from Cal Worthington in Universal City.

NEW--7/20/11--Most of us were in class when they announced that President Kennedy had been shot. What do you remember specifically? What did you do after we were sent home that day?

Heard it in class. School was dismissed and I remember walking home with friends in silence. Very life changing. Watched it on TV at home.

Favorite hangout?

Cruising Henry's and the carhops

NEW--7/20/11--Where did you go after school? At night? On weekends? How often?

Henry's, Crab Cooker - Newport Beach

NEW--7/20/11--What date do you remember most, and why? Was it the conversation, food, movie, song, holding hands or the kiss that made it so memorable?

A blind double date to Knott's Berry Farm. It was awful!

Secret crush in high school?

Several. Too shy though.

NEW--7/20/11--What cool rhythms and crazy vibes stir fond memories of the past, and what were the occasions?

Mostly music and traveling to Southern California, even though it is hardly recognizable. Music brings back the most memories. I would love to go to the fair again.

NEW--7/20/11--What WERE your thoughts about retirement back in our youth?

Who thought about retirement then? I certainly didn't. We were the generation that would never grow old.

NEW--7/20/11--What ARE your current thoughts about retirement?

I am back in school studying art. I have picked up where I left off 40 something years ago and loving it.

Also traveling now. We had a great cruise to the Panama Canal with Karol Kania Crow an her husband Doug in April. Also went to Oahu and Kauai with them.

NEW--7/20/11--Are you retired, getting ready to retire, having a working retirement, or will you ever retire? Thinking about a cold brew and rocking chair on the porch? Hitting the links each day, going fishing whenever you feel like it? Maybe a new hobby like wood carving or restoring antiques? Where are you planning on going from here?

I retired in 2015. It was a challenge at first. I had to have something to do so I went back to school to start studying art again after a lapse of many years. Love it!!

What do you do now?

Travel, school, artwork (both doing it and collecting), riding and taking care of my horse.

Always and forever my husband, children and grandchildren.

I love getting together with friends. It is a good time of life. I always count my blessings!!

NEW--7/20/11--Did you work while going to school? Where? What do you remember?

I worked in the kitchen at Park Avenue Hospital.

REVISED--7/20/11--Past jobs. What events and jobs lead you to your various vocations?

Medical field - mostly management but know most aspects.

Travel much?

Hawaii, Panama Canal Cruise with Karol and Doug Crow, 6 weeks in Italy 2019.

REVISED--7/20/11--Places you want to go? Where would you like to travel?

My son and his family will be living in Florence, Italy for a year for CSU art program - we plan on visiting Europe while he is there. (2018-19)

How often do you get back to Pomona?

Several times a year when we visit our son in Long Beach. We will occasionally drive through but it is mostly unrecognizable country now.

Where else have you lived?

Pomona, Walnut, Pacific Grove, Monterey, and Pebble Beach, Marina and Salinas - all in California.

NEW--7/20/11--Where would you like to live?

Italy

Do you still see/talk to/hang out with any classmates? Who?

Happily, quite a few - mostly by email and facebook.

What would we be surprised to know about you?

I spent the better part of my life raising our two sons and working. Now very active in our 5 grandchildren's lives.

I went through a trial by fire when my first grandson, Peter, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 3 and ended up enduring 3.5 years of chemotherapy at UCSF Children's Hospital. He is 15 and doing great!

I am a Christian and my greatest source of joy and strength in life has been my relationship with Jesus Christ.

I have been very happily married since 1967.

Any vices?

I love sweets and spend way too much time on my iPhone.

Any gray hair yet?

Yes

NEW--7/20/11--Are you telling the truth about the gray hair?

Yes

Anything else we should know?

I color my hair - no gray if I can help it.

Any words of wisdom?

You are never to old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. C.S. Lewis

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths.

Such a tragedy.  I am so saddened to hear this.  Andre was always such a kind soul.  My prayers for his family.

It's always hard to see someone posted to the memory page.  It was particularly difficult to see Darryl this time.  He was such a special man and so multi-faceted and talented.  There are so many words that would describe him.  Beyond all of that though, he was first and foremost Linda's husband.  They were a pair from the beginning with a love that endured.  My heart goes out to Linda, their daughters, and grandchildren.  The memory of this special man will live on them.  I am so glad that we were able to get together and reconnect with Linda and Darryl over the last several years.
