Obituary

Arthur Carroll Powell “Art” – dedicated husband and devoted father of three, passed away at age 69 on Saturday October 29, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lynne, and their three children, Nick, Tori and Adam.

Art was born in Phoenix, AZ on March 31, 1953. His parents Edmund Arthur and Claire Powell moved the family, which included two older brothers, Kenneth (deceased) and Terry to Pomona, California. Art attended Pomona High School and later graduated from California State Fullerton with a degree in business management. After graduating, he began his professional career as a regional marketing manager with Motel 6.

A promotion to Regional Vice President took him back to Arizona. Through his travels in the mountain region, he was exposed to real estate development and fell in love with the challenge and satisfaction of leaving his mark. Upon leaving Motel 6, he earned his real estate and broker’s licenses all while cutting his teeth on hotel development projects with CNA Development.

Yearning for more, Art left CNA and formed a business partnership with Dan Danahoe that would last over 20 years. Together they developed and managed a 300+ unit apartment complex in Gilbert, Arizona. This was followed by many other successful ventures, which included L’Auberge De Sedona, Rosario in Washington State and the Lodge on the Desert in Tucson.

While still managing the apartment complex, Art found a life-long friendship with John MacMillan after meeting on a fly-fishing trip in 1991. Unknown to the duo at the time, this union would be a catalyst to the capstone project of Art’s development career: The Gallery Golf Club at Dove Mountain.

With a tandem vision, the two launched the project in 1996 that encompassed 1500 acres of picturesque desert at the base of the Tortolita Mountains. They began with a single golf course and over the next 25 years grew the Gallery Golf Club to include two 18-hole championship golf courses and a Sports Club. Art was the managing partner of all real estate development which ultimately led to the construction of hundreds of custom and production homes at Dove Mountain. He also was the overseer of all Club and marketing operations. His efforts were the key to making the Gallery “A Masterpiece of the Southwest.”

Art had a kind disposition, was a consummate businessman and an extremely accomplished executive- however, his pride and joy was his family. He was a loving husband and father who wanted nothing but the best for his wife and three children. He loved hard work, but equally he loved his time with his family at their homes in Paradise Valley and Pinetop, Arizona. He could fix nearly anything. His garage was his temple and do-it-yourself home improvement was a constant.

Hobbies were a close third to his work and family; Art knew what he loved to do and enjoyed his life to the fullest. As an avid fly fisher, Art frequented the local streams of the White Mountains in Arizona and traveled the world with his fly rod to Christmas Island, The Seychelles, The Amazon Rainforest, Argentina, Chile, Russia, Norway and The Bahamas, to name a few. Additionally, Art was known as an ambassador for auto sports in Arizona racing open-wheel Formula Mazda cars at Firebird, PIR, The Podium Club, Inde Motor Sports and Apex Motor Club. As a member of both the Arizona Country Club and White Mountain Country Club, Art cherished every day on the golf course.

Art will always be remembered as a respectful and gracious person, helping those close to him at every opportunity. A Celebration of Art’s life will be held at Arizona Country Club on November 20th, 2022 from 3pm to 6pm.
