Obituary

Gary P. Johannesen
July 2, 1944 - Jan. 12, 2018
Gary Johannesen passed away Jan. 12, 2018, from pneumonia after a courageous 15 year battle with cancer. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and served in the Army in Germany for three years. He graduated from Executive College of Barbering and proudly owned and operated "Your Barbershop" in downtown Portland for over 25 years.
Gary met his wife, Evelyn, when he was a patient and she was a student nurse. They were married on April 12, 1969. Together they raised their two sons, Todd and Rick.
He loved the outdoors, fishing, camping, hiking, biking and any activity that could be done as a family. He had a laugh that everyone recognized. One evening while watching "Blazing Saddles" in a theatre, there was a voice from the back that hollered "that you Johannesen?"
Gary will be forever missed, but is now free of pain.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn; sons, Todd (Stephanie) and Rick; grandchildren, Skyler, Kiana, Jakoby, Jillian and Tysen; and his brothers, Jon and Michael. Gary was preceded in death by his grandson, Jack.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date.

Gary and I were never close in school, but became good friends later. I've lost count of how many times he cut my hair while he was at the Jantzen shop. :) Mostly it was during my years as a singer/songwriter, when having my hair just right really mattered. He kept me look good, and when I started working more in Seattle, he passed me off to a man up there that took equally good care of my hair. :) We lost contact about that time, and now it's too late. Gary was always a lot of fun, and a great cutter.

it for yearsAhh...that laugh! Never heard one like that and probably never again..Gary and I went t  Enron grade school and then on to Jefferson high school. I was always a little intimidated by him because I was so shy..we ran into him several years after Graduation when his boys were probably about 8 and 10...we told him we had a babysitter for him..aka.our daughter..ha ha ..so she did babysit for the boys ma y times...from that point on we keep in contCt with he and his wife e slyness as often as possible..in the last couple of years, he and my husband went out to lunch nearly every month..Evelyn and I joined when we could..it was fun! By this time I was no longer shy ha ha and we had lots of laughs..he really liked going with Dave (class of 61) in Dave’s old corvette..this past summer we rented an rv and went camping with he and Evelyn at sunset bay state park in southern Oregon..they have a large rv and have been traveling for years..we were novices at the rv thing , so they both got a kick out of that,!

And more laughs around the campfire with a raised eyebrow like only he could do..I know he suffered the last many years, but dave and I never heard any complaints RIP friends he was the gentle soul who loved animals that I never quite knew as a young girl....now I do and I will remember him with fond memories LINDA Hiefield Reid
