Obituary

Winslow, Larry 71 Feb. 21, 1945 Jan. 10, 2017 Larry Winslow is no longer with us in person, but will always live with us in spirit. Always a joy to be around. His not being around will always be felt. He would have been 72 this February. Larry grew up in N.E. Portland with three brothers, Joe, Dan and Steve. All the boys would occasionally help out at their dads grocery store, Alberta Groceteria, on 21st and Alberta. They also occasionally worked at their grandfathers broom manufacturing business, Acme Brooms, located on N.E. Union Avenue. Larry graduated from Jefferson High School in the early 60's and worked at Miller Paint for a while before settling into a career at the Freightliner corporate office on Swan Island. With his talent for science and engineering he fit into the compliance part of truck manufacturing. Retiring from Freightliner 15 years ago allowed Larry the time to pursue his many other interests, riding and collecting motorcycles, playing golf, bird watching, gardening, photography, sailing, building a dune buggy, and perhaps most importantly spending time with his wife Desiree. He met Desiree at The Court Club, a handball club in northeast Portland about 30 years ago. They were married and moved aboard his sailboat moored on the Columbia River. Later remodeling and moving into a house in N.E. Portland, near Sandy Boulevard. Retiring from Freightliner opened up the opportunity for the two of them to spend time in the small house Larry built just three hours south of the Mexican border in San Felipe. Larry lost Desiree to cancer three years ago after 27 years of marriage. Of all of Larry's passions, perhaps Mexico is near the top of the list. It started in the early 60's, in a fixed up old panel truck. Larry, with two buddy's and brother Joe, headed south into Mexico with resources enough for approximately a year. The stories from this "coming of age trip" are still being told. He came to love the Mexican people, the language, the culture. Larry would always bring a couple of small bicycles, or similar gifts, to pass out to the local kids that lived in his San Filipe neighborhood. He was planning to head back to San Filipe around the middle of January with his small dog Nina. He was packing up, he won't be making it. Complications from strep pneumonia put an end to a life well lived. A celebration of life for Larry has been scheduled between 1 and 5 p.m., Feb. 26, 2017 at McMenamins, Edgefield. -
