I met Doug in 7th grade. We became friends and grew up together during our formative years through Junior High and High School. We had so many things in common and discovered life together. I remember pooling our paper route money to buy an old go-cart and with Doug’s magic touch he was able to get it running and we had a blast driving around. He was born with a gift for understanding engines and as my brother-in-law Bill Hinze said ‘Doug is the best natural mechanic I have ever known’. His love for motors led to many adventures involving mini-bikes, cars, motorcycles, and boats. We were like brothers in many ways. I guess it is because we experienced many of our ‘firsts’ together: music, guitars, girlfriends, dates, proms, football, wrestling. I can remember staying up late into the night with him listening to the newest Beatles album and in 1968 going to our first ‘rock’ concert when we saw Jimi Hendrix. And of course, he introduced me to Betty Hinze for which I will be eternally grateful! Doug always had a passion for life and looked at the world with a sense of wonder. Even into our 60’s he never lost that spark that some of us lose as we age. Whether it was restoring a vintage car or boat, coming up with a new song on the guitar, or watching the sun set while fishing near his home in Florida, his excitement was genuine and contagious.

Even though life has led us down different paths, we always kept in touch. Betty and I enjoyed sharing our boys with ‘Uncle Doug’. In my life, I’ve never known a kinder, more gentle person. He was a fierce competitor on the wrestling mat but would give you the shirt off his back and was always willing to help anyone in need without hesitation. He had the biggest heart. I am honored to have been Doug’s friend. Doug is and will always be my best friend.
