Winston Churchill High School
Class Of 1970 |
Deceased Classmate: Jack Trunnel
Date Deceased: December 31, 2016
Age at Death: 65
Cause of Death: Pancreatic Cancer
Classmate City: McLean, VA
Survived By: Wife Vickie, five sons (Matt, Phil, Adam, Luke and Mason), and 10 grand children.
In late November 2016, Jack was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. All family and friends were shocked. The normal pace of life changed suddenly.
Jack was always calm and in control. Jack was a true Man of God and he knew that God was in control.
Everything happened so quickly that it's so difficult to believe. The day before Jack passed away he asked that we pray for his wife, family, and friends that he loves so much. It is amazing that what started out as a simple backache ended up as stage four pancreatic cancer.
As we keep Jack and his family in our thoughts and prayers let us realize how blessed we were to have him as our friend.
We will sure miss you Jack!

I am sad to learn of Jack's sudden passing. Together with Charlie and Bruce, we were all classmates beginning at Potomac Elementary and shared the best of an "Old Potomac" childhood. My dad called upon Jack's when our farmhouse needed special care, and more than once, Jack rode along. We lost touch after Churchill, but in those early years Jack was always a friend.
I am grateful that Jack brought his infectious smile and caring attitude to my childhood. May his family celebrate his goodness as they pass it on in their own lives.

With a very sad heart I post this comment. Like Suzanne, Charlie, Bruce and many others, I first knew "Jackie" in 1st grade at Potomac Elementary. I have very fond memories of Jack, with his red hair and freckles, and rosy cheeks after a heated game of dodge ball! He was always a gentle soul and truly just a real nice guy. I remember his Mother and my Mom were in the Potomac Garden Club together and living not to far from us (off South Glen on Dobbins Drive), we would occasionally drop by their home with all those boys!
Sending only best wishes of comfort to his wife and family.....the unbearable heartache of losing your spouse at this age is beyond words. But how truly blessed we were to have known him and grow up in such a special time and place as Potomac in the 50's and 60's.
Rest in Peace Jack.

I have great memories of the Churchill class of 68, 69, and 70. There were many people who left great impressions and folks that you would never forget. Jack was one of those people. I am so sad to hear of his passing. I know it is hard to lose a spouse so suddenly and how much pain it causes. They say time heals all, but it is hard. I like to think that God has a plan and wouldn't want him to suffer. So to the family I am very sorry for your loss. I know that Jack will be your gaurdian angel and watch over you. RIP Jack.

Like several others of you, I have known Jack and his family most of my life, even before elementary school, and before the family moved to Norton Road. Many memories of riding in his mother's '57(?) Chevy, bicycling in the neighborhood, at Potomac Elementary School, and later. Sad to see such a good friend go.

I knew Jack through elementary, middle, and high school. I last saw him at the 1970/71 class reunion this past October and had a nice chat with him. He always had a warm, considerate heart, and he has always showed a genuine concern for others. It was a shock to hear of his passing. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Like so many other people, I was blessed to have Jack as a friend! I got to Potomac Elm. in the 6th grade. I remember the youth pick up teams Baseball and Football. If my memory serves me Lee was at least one of the coaches. In High School football he was the tuff guy but off the field just a great person and friend. In Bulldog football practice he always went 110% and knocked me on my Ass many times in the linebacker drills. I talked to him in October for a long time and know he had a lot of fond memories of that time. He also talked a lot about his family which I know meant the world to him.
I will miss my friend Jack!!!

So sad and shocked about the passing of our friend, Jack. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the recent 70/71 reunion in Oct. However, of the photos that were posted on Facebook, Jack was one of the few that I recognized. From the years as we were classmates, all thru Elementary school thru Churchill, Jack was always a nice guy. He rode our school bus during jr and high school. He was in my homeroom during g those years too.
My prayers for his family, I am so sure that Jack was a wonderful husband and father. We have lost a great friend.

Jack's passing brings up memories I have as a child in Potomac. Like so many, I knew Jack from kindergarten. While I didn't get to graduate with my classmates that I had grown up with, I hold those years very dear to my heart. Another early Potomac memory was the square dances. Athough we were all mortified to square off with one another (and hold hands!), it was a fun local event that we shared in common. Many of you who have expressed your sympathies were part of this group, as was Jack. With these fond memories I send my deepest sympathy to his family and close friends. I'm so sad to hear of his passing.

My memories of Jack Trunnell are limited due to my being a Potomac Hills subdivision kid. Football is where my memories were created. I can not recall having too much contact with Jack outside of that.
What I remember most about Jack is exactly what I see in this profile picture. An open, winning smile. Joyful, twinkling eyes. Confident and detrmined.
Initially a fullback like me, he became a linebacker. As those who follow football know, linebackers are the Quarterbacks of the defense. They are leaders.
I moved away from Potomac after high school and aside from our ten year reunion, I have had little to no contact with my classmates.
It is no surprise, however, to see the Jack Trunnell of my youth in his picture and no surprise that he faced the end of his life with courage and determination. Providing all of us with inspiration.

Jack was a gentle person, kind, fun loving and had eyes that sparkled with joy. We went to school together in Potomac from the 1st grade through senior graduation. After I moved from Falls Road to South Glen Road, I used to love to ride horses on Norton Road where Jack lived. I remember feeling good knowing that Jack and his family lived close by.
One early memory that really stands out is something I shared with Jack at our 40th Churchill High School Reunion. When we were little, in the early stage of elementary school, our classmates were looking at songbooks. With great enthusiasm Jack said, “Can we sing The Star Speckled Banana?” I giggled to myself knowing that he meant The Star Spangled Banner. Well, we all sang it and that was that. However, I still giggle when I recall this precious memory.
When I heard of Jack's passing, I was shocked, I cried, but most importantly I prayed for the Lord to strengthen Jack’s family and draw them into His heart.
Praise be to God that Jack now lives in eternal glory with the King of Glory, Christ Jesus.
