Two Utahns lost their lives in recent, unrelated accidents in Utah County. A construction worker died Tuesday after falling from an I-15 bridge in Santaquin while an East Carbon woman died Sunday from injuries received in a one-car rollover in American Fork Canyon Friday, July 16. Killed were:Terry Memmott, 50, Spanish Fork. Mary Bond, 39, East Carbon.
-- Memmott died early Tuesday morning after he fell from a bridge on the freeway after trying to help drivers avoid a piece of discarded tire..
Utah Highway Patrol spokesman Verdi White said Memmott was trying to remove a piece of tire from the roadway so it wouldn't cause an accident in the area of the Santaquin Center Street freeway bridge. White said apparently Memmott felt he had to jump to avoid being hit by fast-moving traffic and misjudged where the side railing and the hole in the bridge were. He fell through about 10-12 feet before hitting the cement side of the bridge and rolling onto the roadway, suffering head trauma. He was transported to the Mountain View Hospital in Payson where he was pronounced dead at approximately 1:30 a.m. -- Bond died Sunday morning at 3:25 a.m. at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake after the car driven by Christopher Kemp, 33, of Bluffdale, rolled. Kemp was also injured and transported to the American Fork Hospital where he was treated and then arrested for investigation of driving under the influence. Kemp was booked into the Utah County Jail and released on bail, said Lt. Ron Fernstedt, spokesman for the Utah County Sheriff's Department.
