He joined the Army in 1968 and served his county proudly in the Vietnam War.  He loved sitting on his porch with his wife, Deborah, enjoying the singing and sounds of birds and watching their garden, that they planned together, grow.  His greatest joy was his grandchildren, with whom he enjoyed spending time.  He enjoyed his time antique shopping and traveling with his beloved wife.  He was a dedicated member of Liberty United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees.  He loved his church and church members, and was often seen with his loving wife working and beautifying the church.  He was most often noticed spending a great amount of time with his son, Dee, who was his pride and joy.  They built, planned and worked side by side as he taught his son everything he knew about life.  Many of his friends knew James as "Dobber", and he was always telling funny stories and loved a good laugh.

James is survived by his wife, Deborah, Quitman; son, Dr. James Dee Dopson, Jr. and wife Rachel, Quitman; daughters, Carrie Branum, Tyler, and Tammy Bollman, Heath; sisters, Lois Jones and Frances Pinson, both of Quitman; and six grandchildren, Bailey, Harrison, Jackson, Claire, Erin and Thomas.
