William Guenther

RACINE – William Allen Guenther, age 75, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, December 4, 2022 following a heart attack. Born in Racine April 12, 1947, he was the youngest of four brothers and resided in Racine for most of his life.

William who was known as Bill to friends, family and associates, was a 1965 graduate of Washington Park High School. Bill received a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in 1970 from Milton College and furthered his education at the University of Denver in the area of hotel and restaurant management.

Bill was a vivacious individual – outgoing, helping and generous – and enjoyed the hospitality business. While in college, he worked several summers in Ephraim, WI at the Anderson Hotel. In late summer 1971, Bill accepted a position with the Resort Division of Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL. He was involved with the grand opening of the Polynesian Village Resort Hotel in October of that year. After several years, Bill left Disney World and held supervisory and management positions at several different hotels and restaurant operations, principally in Florida. In 1979, Bill accepted a position with S.C. Johnson as Operations Director at The Council House. Over the course of time Bill was assigned responsibilities beyond just his duties at The Council House and moved to the S.C. Johnson Main Campus. When Bill retired from S.C. Johnson in August 2003, he was Manager of Corporate Travel and Hospitality and had 24 years of service with the company.

One of Bill’s professional involvements was with IACC – International Association of Conference Centers, in its formative years. As a board member he helped with the expansion of the organization’s membership base and conferences. In retirement Bill enjoyed very much – his contacts with people he had worked with in the hospitality industry; his contacts with former classmates; and especially his contacts with his Panera Bread coffee group friends.

Bill was proud of his nephews and nieces and took great interest in their activities and that of their children.

Surviving are two brothers: John of Egg Harbor, WI and Paul (spouse Ruth) of Mt. Pleasant, WI, three married nieces and two married nephews, their spouses and children. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Richard J. Guenther and Jean H. Guenther, his oldest brother Richard H. Guenther, and his sister-in-law Christine Guenther.

A family Celebration of Life service was held December 30th at the Sturino Funeral Home with Carol Schowalter, Celebrant officiating. Interment was at Graceland Cemetery in the family plot.

Those who wish to remember Bill in a special way might consider a gift to their favorite charity; or to the Racine Zoological Society, the Racine Art Museum (Wustum Program), or the Peninsula Players Theatre, Fish Creek, WI.

Yes, what a shock.  Bill and I were classmates starting at Fratt elementary school, then McKinley Jr. High, and finally at Park.  I posted a picture of our 1959 6th grade class picture from Fratt; Bill is in the first row wearing a long tie (almost all the boys in the class were wearing bow ties).  His face never really changed much through the years.  We had a good talk at the 50th, particularly about the Johnson office and research tower where he was instrumental at getting the tour for us.  I will miss the friendly correspondence that we had through the years on our web site.

The first thing I think about when I think of Bill is his friendliness. I remember this trait going back to our days at McKinley. He was so open to everybody, without an ounce of pretension. He was never in a clique, but got along with everyone.

Fast forward half a century, and there he was, greeting us all at the reunion, the same guy, more polished after a lifetime in the executive hospitality world, but still the same open, welcoming guy he was from the get-go. When Sue and I re-joined the group after so many years, he made us feel right at home.

A good guy. We'll miss him.

I'm saddened to hear that Bill has passed away.  He was such a genuinely nice guy.  I really only got to know him during the initial planning of our 50th Class Reunion.  I wish I had gotten to know him back in high school.  We found out early on in our conversations that we both shared a love of Door County and were both members of the Door County Land Trust.  I enjoyed talking with him, mostly about DC, and we kept in touch during the years that I lived in Sarasota, FL.  Unfortunately, our last conversation was back in mid July.  I'm sure that Bill has left a lasting impression on those that have had the pleasure of knowing him and he will be dearly missed.  My sincere codolences to his family for their loss.

P.S. When my time comes I have no idea how the news will get to this site.  D.P.

Hopefully, Don, someone you stay in touch with from time to time will be notified. Sad news spreads and it's so nice to share good memories of our classmates who are gone.
