In Memory

Richard E. (Tim) Timberlake

Richard E. “Tim” Timberlake, III, 80, of Wilmington, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022, after a long battle with Lewey Body Dementia.    He was born on May 12, 1942 in Youngsville, NC.

Tim is survived by his wife Barbara Timberlake, and his loyal companion Danyboy, his “Big Red Dog”.   He is also survived by his sisters Vickie Allen (Alvis), Jimmie Ann Hawrylak (Mike), Denise Joiner (Bryan); his brother Ronald Timberlake; and many extended family members.

Tim served in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and retired after 20 years of service at the rank of Major.  He soon moved to Brunswick County and became a Deputy with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department, from which he retired in 2005.  While living in Brunswick County, Tim started the Ant Hill Shooting Range.   Tim was an avid USPSA shooter, having competed in many major matches all across the country.

While competitive shooting was a passion, so was his love of travel.  He and his wife Barbara traveled the world to many exciting and exotic places, including Vietnam, Thailand, the outback of Australia, cruising the Amazon, hiking in Macchu Picchu, and ziplining in Costa Rica.

As his illness advanced, Tim loved to sit on the couch, watching boats on the river while petting his “big red dog”, and going out to dinner.

Tim was an Officer and a gentleman, a loving husband and stepfather, an awesome big brother, and a friend to many.  He will be missed.

A Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Friday, June 10, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, 28401.  A Graveside Service with military honors will follow at 3:00 PM at Oakdale Cemetery, 520 N. 15th St., Wilmington, 28401.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Tim was a friend of mine while we were in school. He had a great personality and lots of friends. I appreciate his service to our country. RIP Tim!

Tim was a friend for many years.  My mother would not allow me to date until I was 16 and Tim was my first date. He would have graduated in the Broughton Class of 61 but left for Military School in the Fall of 1959 and graduated there in 1961.

Tim attended Wake Forest University until recruited by Campbell University to play soccer. During his senior year, he was drafted into the Army.  His father wanted to help delay his draft date until he graduated, but Tim felt it was his obligation to go when called.  Too many young men did not have that privilege and he felt he should abide by the same rule that others had to follow.  Thankfully, Tim survived Vietnam.

Tim and I were in the boy scouts at White Memorial and also took an 31 Ford and did a lot of work on it and the Mercury engine before he left to go to military school. Kinda lost track after that until college years until we double dated with him one summer. Lots of good times.
