I graduated in 1962 when the Sig house was still on Clark Avenue with a degree in Electrical Engineering. That was a time when Sigma Chi dominated The Technician, and I had been privileged to serve as Editor. I had been selected for many of the campus honoraries, so I was proud to have won the Balfour Award for both the chapter and the Carolinas Province. I had been commissioned at graduation, so when I went on active duty I was assigned to a special ops group in Army Intelligence and Security. I had some interesting adventures from Central America to the Berlin Wall.
After the military, I joined IBM in Washington, D.C., working at NASA during the exciting Gemini and Apollo days. I met my wife Susie there; she was a Kappa from Carolina, it turns out. Our first child Scott was born there in 1969. We moved to Roanoke, Virginia in 1971, where I was IBM marketing manager for a good part of southwest Virginia. Our daughter Diane was born there later that year.
Our family moved to Raleigh in 1974, and we have stayed there since. At IBM I was a product marketing manager in Store Systems for a while, which made me responsible for the first scanning supermarket system in the world; that was an interesting experience. After a number of product and marketing management positions in Research Triangle Park, I retired in 2001; I missed my goal of retiring at 60 by two months.
During our time in Raleigh, we have been very active in our Presbyterian Church. I have served as Chair of the Board of Deacons and as an Elder. Currently I lead a large adult Sunday School class, and sing in the choir. We have been blessed by five grandchildren, ranging in age from 13 to 6.
My times at State and at Delta Epsilon were very important in preparing me for what has been an interesting and hopefully productive life.
