After graduating from N.C. State, I served three years in the U.S. Army, primarily in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mary Brent and I got married a couple of weeks prior to our departure for Hawaii. Lacking about a semester from graduation at UNC, Mary Brent enrolled in the University of Hawaii shortly after our arrival, graduating in 1970. Being a U of H graduate proved to be a real plus – it enabled her to get a teaching job in Hawaii. Upon our return from Hawaii, I entered the MBA program at UNC, graduating in 1974 and taking a job with Peat Marwick Mitchell (which is now KPMG) for the next 5 years. In 1979 I went to work for Kimley-Horn and Associates (a civil engineering consulting firm) in Raleigh as their Chief Financial Officer and stayed there, serving in several different capacities, until my retirement in 2008.

Mary Brent has been a community volunteer since she stopped working right after the boys were born. She has been involved in a number of different organizations over the past 30 years, included are: The Junior League of Raleigh, the National Junior League, Safechild, Peace College, The Raleigh Fine Arts Society, The Rex Hospital Guild, The North Carolina Museum of History, Ravenscroft School, and White Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Since retiring my “To Do List” has gotten longer than when I was working. I served on the Carolina Country Club Board of Directors (to include being president and co-chair of the long range planning committee), the StepUp Ministry Board, and the Ravenscroft School Board of Trustees.

My hobbies include golf, hunting, fishing and overseeing our farm, travelling, attending Wolfpack football and basketball games, and spending time with our 5 grandchildren. Mary Brent developed a passion for golf about 10 years ago, so many our trips are centered around golf and when we are at the beach (Figure Eight) for the summer we enjoy playing together. Brent and Rob are avid hunters and fisherman. Brent worked several years as a mate (and now has his commercial captain’s license) on a sport fishing boat in Hatteras, Manteo, and in Mexico. We spend a great deal of time in the spring and summer fishing off the North Carolina coast for sailfish, marlin, dolphin, wahoo and tuna.

Mary Brent and I enjoy travelling. We try to take one extended trip each year. Since retiring, we have cruised the Baltic, Mediterranean, been to Australia, New Zealand and the French Polynesian Islands. While in Australia several years ago, we were fortunate, by chance, to meet Jeff Schneider’s older brother who shared all the real scoop on Jeff.

We are very sorry that we are unable to attend the reunion. We will be in the Canadian Rockies with several other couples which has been on the calendar for almost a year. I am sure you will have a great time.
