Obituary of Bernice Johnson Cofield

Bernice Johnson Cofield was the eldest of nine children born to the union of Sam and Mildred Johnson on September 1, 1946. She went home to receive her crown on July 3, 2005.

Bernice graduated from William G. Enloe High School and attended St. Augustine's College. She was last employed at the Department of Juvenile Justice as a Juvenile Court Secretary. She worked there until illness prevented her further employment.

Bernice accepted Christ as her Personal Lord and Savior many years ago, and walked with Him until she departed this life. Bernice was an active member of Mt. Peace Baptist Church in Raleigh, N.C.

Bernice leaves to share and cherish her precious memories her children: Yolanda Boddie and Stephanie Cole,  both of Raleigh, N.C. and Frederick (Mary) Cole of Oklahoma, four brothers, Carl (Angie) Johnson of Raleigh, NC , Alphonso Johnson of San Diego, CA, Byron (Christine) Johnson of Knightdale, NC and Shelby Johnson of Tennessee, three sisters, Constance Hunter, Miriam Johnson-Jones (Calvin), all of Raleigh and Valerie Johnson of Garner NC, four grandchildren and a host of cousins, friends and acquaintences too numerous to mention.

I remember Bernice well from her time at Enloe. Quiet and serious, she focused on her academic work. Only years later did I realize how difficult it must have been for this young woman to be one of only two black students in the Enloe senior class of 1964. She broke important ground for our school, our state and our country. May she rest in peace and may we all pause for a moment to reflect on her life and contributions to a better world.
