San Diego County's 280,000-plus-acre Cedar Fire killed 12 people.

While the San Diego brushfires have officially claimed 12 lives throughout the county, the largest concentration of deaths occurred in and around Wildcat Canyon, where residents had little time to react early Sunday morning. In addition to the deaths in the Lake View Hills Estate, five other people were killed along Wildcat Canyon Road, which knifes through the area and the adjacent Barona Indian Reservation to the north.

James and Solange Shohara and their grown son Randy tried to escape by running down to the San Vicente Reservoir, the lake their home overlooks. They were found on an access road; two of the bodies were in a truck, the third was on the road.
