Assateague Island National Park Posted Friday, August 7, 2009 11:23 AM Another beach story to share. We didn't make it to Delaware this year due to my procrastination, but did go to Maryland. We camped at Island Resort Campground (in Newark, MD), which is set up around a small man-made lake (see pics on my profile). We spent 2 days on Assateague Island (which was about 15 minutes from the campground) swimming and enjoying the breeze. You can buy a week-long pass for $15 which gives you unlimited access to the park and the furthest we had to walk to get to the beach was about a 1/4 mile. The nice thing about Assateague is that there is only one section of the beach that is "guarded" so it isn't as crowded as the more commercialized beaches. The campground was also only about 20-25 minutes from Ocean City which was nice for an evening on the boardwalk. My advice would be to not camp right at Assateague unless you have "self contained" facilities--the restroom facilities at the beach (which I assume would be the same at the camp sites) are "unimproved" to say the least :-) .
