Mike Merritt

Mike Merritt

Thanks to the research by our classmate, Ralph Norman, we have the following information regarding Mike's life and death following our graduation in 1962:

Michael Frank Merritt (October 31st, 1943-January, 1980?) Mike married fellow classmate Jeanie Viser on March 31st, 1960.  Mike worked in several grocery stores as a checker, and he attended North Texas State University as a part-time student. He and Jeanie had three daughters and a son, and he eventually became involved in the automobile repair business in Richardson.

According to news articles in the Richardson Daily News, Mike disappeard in January, 1980. His car was found abandoned at the airport in Houston.  However, his body has never been found.  In spite of this fact, Mike was declared legally dead after seven years-the legal date of death established as January, 1980 (no specific date).  Mike's case is still open.

Originally, the case was classified as a missing person since Jeanie Merritt had filed a missing person report. After extensive investigation, the police reclassified the case from a missing person to murder. One person was charged with the murder, and that's where the case stands to date.

Site Administrator's Note:   If you knew Mike, please post some of your memories of him for all of us to share.

Thanks, John Buchanan, site administrator

Mike had purchased a service station next to old Safeway store (across from Malt Shop) on Greenville Ave.  As I remember he did not sale gas, but used building as auto repair. (This had been owned by our classmate Bonnie Boyers' dad while we were in high school).  I was selling used cars as a sideline and frequently used Mike's services in mid 70s.  It really saddened me when I heard of his disappearance.
