Dancing in the Flow of Life

Forty-plus professional and pre-professional dancers — including East Stroudsburg University Dance Company alumni and PA Dance Network Student Dance Company— will unite for “You Are the Wave,” a benefit concert honoring the modern dance legacy of the late Catherine “Kitty” Culnane, on Saturday at ESU’s Cecilia S. Cohen Recital Hall.
Culnane, who passed away in September at age 67, was a professor of dance at ESU, as well as Marywood and Lock Haven universities. “You Are the Wave” will celebrate the Minnesota native’s life and work as dancer, professor, educator, choreographer, and mentor. Maria Triano, owner/director of PA Dance Network in Analomink, serves as director/producer of the event, with Abby Slater, founder and artistic director of Symmetry Dance Company in Scranton, as assistant director and Mathew Pierson as technical director. Dr. Elizabeth Gibbons and the University Dance Company at ESU — the latter for which the ESU professor serves as artistic director — are co-sponsors of the event.
A choreographer and teacher of modern dance, Culnane attended The Juilliard School as a member of Group One, the inaugural class of the drama division. She later received an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota and a master’s degree from ESU. The Stroudsburg resident was in the process of completing her doctorate at Marywood University.
Culnane, who was a member of the PoconoArts Council, trained with dancers such as Anna Sokolow, Elizabeth Keen, and Ruth Currier. She previously was a professional actress in New York City and performed at Lincoln Center, as well as in several off-Broadway productions. She also consulted for Norman Lear’s Act III Productions at Paramount Studios.
“You Are the Wave,” also featuring PA Dance Vision of East Stroudsburg and Symmetry Dance Company, consists of 16 numbers, with half of the program dedicated to Culnane’s choreography. Two Culnane routines — “Street Circus” and “You Are the Wave” — include additional choreography by Triano, with the remaining half of the show featuring choreography by Triano, Slater and Rob Robinson. In addition, Tap Ties — a professional tap-dance company from the Lehigh Valley with co-direction by Jill Fitzgerald and Amy Browne-Smith — will perform works by Shelley Oliver and Dorothy Wassermann. Fifty percent of ticket proceeds from the dance benefit will support two University Dance Company scholarships: the Catherine Culnane and the Elizabeth Gibbons dance endowed scholarships.
