RAY TAZEWELL CREEKMORE 1951-1969

I remember Ray. Do you? You should. Ray was our first classmate to leave us. Ray's picture, his spirit, is in our yearbook on page 166, right there with the rest of us. But his memoriam comes before us, as it should, on page 159. Each of us, every once in a while, need to pause. Remember Ray. Remember that, in 1969, when our future was just beginning, Ray's future ended. Then remember how fortunate we are, 40 years on.

"Life is a long campaign where every victory merely leaves the ground free for another battle..." - Theodore Roosevelt.

Ray's campaign ended much too soon.

I think of Ray often. He taught me the travelers pick on the quitar. I can still see his smile. I remember the silly superlative he gave Steve Crowder! The most subtle on Senior Day. Looking forward to seeing him again on the other side after a hundred more years.

Ray's death was tragic. He was a wonderful guy and my cousin.

His death was so strange and shocking. He contracted amoebic menengitis, apparently when swimming in the James River.

The only other Ray in our family, that I know of, was my father's twin brother, Ray, who drowned after going through the ice in Bryan Park Lake at age twelve.

Both Rays went too soon.

Ray was a wonderful young man, and his passing was a great loss for his loving parents, Helen and Ed.
