William Lugar (Lugar)

Les was and always will be my best friend. He was an amazing guy, Little Les we called him at DSF but after he left for VA Tech he grew! He started the Joe Brown Allstars and kept the group in touch for many years after highschool. Les moved to the Virgin Islands and I happened to be living on St. John at the same time for a few years. We got together several times when I was playing tennis tournaments on St. Croix. Les lived a fascinating life from his rebellious days at Tech where he was identified as part of the Blacksburg Seven. Great story with him being kicked out of school for shooting off fireworks during a speech by a DC bigwig..He was innocent, I say! But Tech didn't agree so Les got a year off before graduation and then got his law degree at Mississippi State (?). But his passion was always sports and he was quite good at tennis, croquet and basketball. I came up to Virginia a number of times while he was fighting cancer and what a fight he put up. Hopefully I will see many of you at the next DSF gathering and we can exchange stories. Stay safe old friends.

William Jefferson O'Flaherty

Les and I were roommates our freshman year at Tech. Those were tumultuous times, with the  war and general political unrest. Les quickly got involved in student government and I joined a fraternity. Sadly our interests took different paths and we drifted apart. I well remember the Blacksburg Seven incident Billy alluded to. Thankfully many years later we got together at Phil's and reminisced. Les was a great guy who had a dry wit and wickedly sly smile! I attended his funeral with other Freeman classmates. Rest easy, my friend.
